...with Jimmy Lake as their HC.
He’s proven to be a beast on the recruiting trail, has proven his DC chops and might very well take their program back to an elite level. Time will tell.

While so many posters on this site poo poo the idea of us hiring someone without HC experience, I’d be more than willing to have us take a “risk” by hiring an asst coach with great credentials. Btw, Ryan Day is 15-0 as a HC and had zero experience.

Both Day and Lake were assistants with those same teams, already had chemistry with those teams, already had recruiting connections with those teams.

Much different to pluck an asst and move to a unique environment like LA, than to assume Lake will build on what he already has at UW.

LA is a unique market and you need to have the right skillset to survive.

I don't think Day does as well at say UCLA. Don't think Lake would do as well at say Ole Miss. I don't think Swinney would have nearly as much success if he were to coach at say...ND.

There aren't "hard-fast" rules for coaching, just trying to remove as many variables and find the right fit...unless you can secure a Meyer or Saban.

Great point. Inheriting a winning program is easier. You could add Lincoln riley to that list.

If Day can keep his good thing going, he may do just fine in 3-4 years. Riley at Oklahoma took over a solid program and is also keeping his good thing going, even if players/system were Stoops'. Chip did this while at Oregon, has never been able to replicate elsewhere.

Shaw also did this w/ Stanford...for a while. Pretty tough to keep a good thing going indefinitely, unless you're Saban/Meyer/Swinney.

I might agree with the OP. Untried yet so way too soon to make a judgement on Lake, obviously. I always thought Petersen was a good coach, maybe a very good coach, but not a great or an NC type of coach.

As I posted on another thread, this is going to be more like "Jim Lambright 2.0" for the Fuskies.

I would consider a really good defensive coordinator that is a good recruiter for sure. Keep Harrell for the time being and shore up the defense = immediate improvement. I think we could easily tweak the existing offense to add more running and some of the other things we want to see over time.

How are these guys at recruiting? Dave Aranda, Morgan Scalley, Brent Venables,

Not sure Dan Lanning has enough experience??

Good recruiting does not matter if you do not win. Hell, Kiffin and Sark could recruit.

Impossible to say just yet. I’m thinking he’ll do well, but we’ll have to see.

Jimmy Lake might be the next Saban or the next Sumlin.

They are better off because Peterson is not leaving the program. He's still there as an "adviser" and his role may be limitless (to a point). This gives them the chance to bring in another coach.

    I'VE BEEN THINKING MYSELF...

...why can't a solid run element be added to the air raid to male it even more diversified and more potent than the pure power game or air attack?

Clay was probably grooming Clancy as his successor
