Wanted to jump back in here to give a Monday morning update on the Sunday Clay Helton situation and a little transparency on our end.

What we first heard Sunday from multiple sources was that Clay Helton had been fired. Digging further, despite them being adamant in their initial statements, this turned out to be speculation as to what they felt would happen, and feel will eventually happen. In following up, we also heard from several sources that nothing had been said or announced, which is why we held off on running a report stating one way or the other.

There was a report from Sports Illustrated stating that Mike Bohn planned to fire Clay Helton in the coming days. USC fired back at that report in a big way, giving strong statements to national writers that Bohn had made no decision yet.

There was no decision announced on Sunday, and while some players were surprised by a team meeting being announced for 5:30 Sunday evening, USC’s statement was that the meeting had been scheduled for weeks in the event that Utah beat Colorado to advance to the Pac-12 South Championship game.

At the meeting, Helton addressed the team to state that he would be their coach for as long as they let him.

Helton was out recruiting on Sunday, as USC wide receiver commit Joshua Jackson tweeted a photo of Helton and Keary Colbert during his in-home visit.

News as to Helton’s future is certainly expected by the end of the week, and potentially as early as today, but nothing confirmed there.

Let's hope these sources are right!!! If the only negative is that nothing is official, that's great news.

The fact that they haven't come out and outright denied that he will return should speak volumes. Unless this is typical USC Athletic Department incompetence at work, which is a distinct possibility.

Is a team meeting at 5 pm on a Sunday standard practice?

That's the report folks like Pat, Pete, and Bruce are saying are is untrue but the kicker is that that SI report never said it was going to happen today or that a decision would be made today. While their sources (all seem similar) are denying base information and just the decision part.

Here’s the thing: the reports contradicting Maya make no logical sense. You’re telling us that Mike Bohn still can’t figure out whether he should retain Clay Helton or not? How could that possibly be? What additional information does he need to collect?

Isn’t it far more likely that he was waiting to make an announcement until after USC had been eliminated from the conference championship game? And that he wanted the players, and maybe Helton himself, to hear in person before it made its way into the media?

The refusals don't make sense but when does that department ever make sense?

A team meeting at 5 on bowl selection sunday doesn't strike me as unusual. Good cover for a goodbye announcement.

It’s not bowl selection Sunday. That’s next week after the conference title games have been played.

The anger from the AD is probably because they wanted to break it to the team first.

Not sure how they’ve handled Sunday evenings this season, but this could line up with a formal announcement of something to the team.

Actually sounds like the professional response from HH to not confirm Maya's report if they indeed have a team meeting to break the news at 5pm.

What a cluster fuck. Brought to you by the same dopes that hired Sark, Kiffin, Helton, Pat H , Swann and our butt checking president. It just never ends. If I were a head coach I would require a contract that gave me total control of my program with this pack of morons milling around.
