The narrative. Why does a segment of the population that has zero deaths be required to wear masks?

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director (CDC) Director Rochelle Walenksy, after the agency eased its guidance on mask-wearing indoors, said that young children under the age of 12 should still wear masks indoors.

“So it is very clear that in the context of the last 24 hours, where we have a new vaccine now for 12-to-15-year-olds and now this new guidance being able to unmask if you’re vaccinated,” she said on PBS’s “Newshour” on Thursday. “We do need to update our camp guidance. That is going to be among the first that we are going to be updating.”

Walensky then said that for “younger children” who cannot get COVID-19 vaccines “right now,” the CDC “would still recommend we treat them as if they are unvaccinated and that they should wear masks.”

When asked on PBS about whether children should not wear masks outdoors, Walensky appeared to confirm the guidance: “Outdoors, right. So the same strategies really apply.”

“If you’re outdoors, if you’re in small gatherings, if you’re mixing with people in your household or another household outdoors, same principles apply, then you could take off your mask in outdoor settings,” she added. “If you’re wrestling, if you’re gathered over a soccer ball breathing heavily, lots of kids who you don’t know, we would still recommend masking in those settings.”

Earlier Thursday, the CDC said that fully vaccinated individuals don’t have to wear masks outside, unless state, local, territorial or tribal government guidance says otherwise. Private businesses can also require masks, the agency said, adding that vaccinated people should still wear masks on buses, trains, airplanes, and other public transportation.

In recent months, criticism has mounted over schools, businesses, and governments requiring small children to wear masks. Michigan issued a mandate requiring children aged 2 to 4 to have masks in public settings like camps, schools, or daycares.

“When the pandemic began, the lack of knowledge about COVID-19 justified this behavior,” wrote City Journal’s John Tierney last month. “That excuse has vanished. It became clear long ago that the virus is less dangerous to children than the flu, and that keeping schools open poses minimal risk of spreading infections. Yet despite this evidence—and despite the widespread availability of vaccines to teachers and other adults—many schools have yet to reopen full-time, and others are still making students as miserable as possible.”

Meanwhile, Fox News’ Tucker Carlson in late April said forcing children to wear masks outdoors should “be illegal,” arguing that it psychologically impacts young children and is tantamount to child abuse.

“Your response when you see children wearing masks as they play should be no different from your response to seeing someone beat a kid at Walmart,” Carlson said, adding that people should call Child Protective Services. The comment sparked criticism from several Democratic lawmakers.

The CDC’s ease of mask-wearing mandates came in the backdrop of Republican-led states ending their statewide mask orders.

To counter the critical race theory being taught in school, parents and patriots need to start raising their voices at local school board meetings and have their say about the curriculum, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) said on Wednesday.

“I charged the men and women at home watching this: Get involved. Get involved at the local level, show up to your school board meetings, listen to what is taking place, have an opinion on the curriculums that are being taught to our children,” Boebert said during a press conference when House GOP members introduced two bills to counter critical race theory.

“If you feel compelled, run for office, be on the school board. That is the most important part of government, especially right now,” Boebert continued. “Our children are so valuable, their future is so valuable, and we cannot lose it to something like this racist critical race theory.”

Boebert is a mother of four. She said her kids’ future motivated her to run for office and that she wants the “American dream to remain for generations to come.”

“Democrats want to teach our children to hate each other. This radical theory brings division, not unity. It advances hate, not love. And it puts a person’s skin as more important than the content of our character,” she added.

“America is the greatest country this world has ever seen,” Boebert said. “If America falls, it will be because we destroyed ourselves from within. It’ll be because we were taught to hate instead of love, we gloried division over unity, we praised communism over freedom.”

Critical race theory reduces the lessons that can be gleaned from U.S. history to the lens of racism: that the nation was built from a struggle between white “oppressors” and “oppressed” minorities—similarly to Marxism’s reduction of human history to a struggle between the “bourgeoisie” and the “proletariat.”

However, advocates of critical race theory claim that the theory helps kids “think critically” about the role race has played in American history.

Boebert warned, “As soon as politicians have too much power, they destroy everything. We are seeing what’s happened with the democrat-run House, Senate, White House, may as well have the Supreme Court, the so-called fourth branch of government, those three-letter agencies, they are fundamentally transforming America.”

“We are the United States of America and not the Divided States of America,” Boebert told NTD. “This is federal tax dollars—the American workers’ tax dollars—that are going to fund this agenda. We have teachers unions that are destroying our children’s education and future because of their woke agenda.

“Someone needs to put a stop to it. And that’s exactly what we’re here to do,” she said of the GOP bills.

One of the two bills looks to prohibit the United States military from promoting critical race theory. The second bill would ban any federal funds from promoting the neo-Marxist theory as well as codify an executive order signed by former President Donald Trump last year that banned the ideology from federal agency training.

Last week at the state level, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed a law banning critical race theory in public schools, while Arkansas enacted a law to prohibit government agencies from training according to the theory.

However, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee signed a law last week to require training critical race theory for educators in public schools.

Another asshat that the FBI will ignore....

The Michigan Senate Oversight Committee issued a subpoena Thursday requiring documents relating to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s handling of nursing homes during the pandemic after its initial request had been ignored for more than two months.

The committee issued a subpoena to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) asking for all documents and communications relating to COVID-19 policies and information, including policies involving long-term, congregate care facilities.

Oversight Committee chairman Edward McBroom said during the meeting that the committee sent out the initial request on March 2 and a follow-up request on April 8, but thus far, “we’ve received completely nothing.”

Emily Schwarzkopf, director of MDHHS’s legislative, appropriations, and constituent services, explained that the request would result in the identification of over 55,000 documents with an estimated cost of $70,000. She said the department doesn’t have dedicated staff or funding to fulfill these requests, but added the department “intends to comply with a request from the committee whether a subpoena is issued or not.”

Senate oversight committee vice-chair Lana Theis noted that a subpoena is necessary.

“Every time we send something, and we get something back, it sounds like they’re parsing everything out. So it appears obvious that that department is trying to avoid producing the information,” Theis said.

The committee voted 3-0 to issue a subpoena. The only Democrat in the committee, Jeff Irvin, was absent.

The subpoena (pdf) states that the required documents must be provided no later than 5 p.m. on May 27. Failure to obey maybe be punished as contempt of the legislature, in addition to any other remedy available by law.

In the early days of the pandemic, Michigan, along with New York and four other states, implemented a policy that sought to prevent hospital overcrowding by returning medically stable seniors recovering from COVID-19 to nursing homes. Whitmer issued an executive order in April 2020 to designate 21 nursing homes as “regional hubs.”

According to state data, 5,712 COVID-19 deaths in Michigan have been either residents or staff of long-term care facilities, equaling about 31 percent of the statewide virus-linked deaths, the Detroit News
    reported.

Michigan GOP lawmakers called for an investigation into whether Whitmer’s policies exacerbated the outbreak in nursing homes.

Whitmer defended herself in March that her orders followed federal guidance, and there were no mandates to return COVID-19-positive patients to long-term care facilities, only conditions imposed to ensure their safety.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat, refused to investigate Whitmer, saying she saw no evidence to “suggest that Gov. Whitmer’s efforts to contain COVID-19 in Michigan’s nursing homes resulted in increased deaths.”

“Over a third of people who died from COVID-19 in our state were long-term care facility residents and workers,” Theis said in a
statement. “We deserve to know what decisions led the Whitmer administration to implement, maintain, and publicly defend its tragic policy.”

“The administration must be fully transparent, and a full investigation must be conducted to determine whether any wrongdoing occurred and, if it did, to ensure justice is delivered,” Theis added.

The Epoch Times has reached out to Whitmer’s office for comment.

A group of international researchers are pushing for a “proper investigation” into the origins of COVID-19, including examining the lab accident theory that a World Health Organization (WHO) probe previously dismissed.

The WHO-led mission in Wuhan, which released its findings in late March, did not give “balanced consideration” to the theory that the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus came from a laboratory accident, rather giving more weight to the natural spillover hypothesis—the event that the virus spread to humans through an animal host, the scientists argued in a letter published May 14 in Science, a peer-reviewed academic journal.

The letter was signed by 18 medical experts who specialize in virology, biology, immunology, and epidemiology.

The WHO team assessed the animal origin theory as “likely to very likely” and the other as “extremely unlikely,” despite having “no findings in clear support of either,” they wrote, noting that of 313 pages total, the report only dedicated four pages to addressing a possible lab accident.

“We must take hypotheses about both natural and laboratory spillovers seriously until we have sufficient data,” the authors said. “A proper investigation should be transparent, objective, data-driven … and responsibly managed to minimize the impact of conflicts of interest.”

The letter adds to the growing efforts seeking a full inquiry into the origins of the CCP virus, which causes the COVID-19 disease, since the WHO report was published, which critics said the investigation lacked independence and allowed Beijing to have a heavy hand.

The United States, the European Union, and more than a dozen other nations have raised concerns about the WHO study, pointing to the report’s significant delay and Beijing’s denial to provide crucial raw data.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has also noted the difficulties in accessing data from China. He said that the laboratory leak possibility “requires further investigation, adding that “all hypotheses remain on the table.”

“In this time of unfortunate anti-Asian sentiment in some countries, we note that at the beginning of the pandemic, it was Chinese doctors, scientists, journalists, and citizens who shared with the world crucial information about the spread of the virus—often at great personal cost,” said the authors of the May 14 letter. “We should show the same determination in promoting a dispassionate science-based discourse on this difficult but important issue.”

    Lab Escape Theory
Officials in the United States and elsewhere have cast attention on the lab accident theory despite Beijing’s effort to disassociate such links.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Robert Redfield, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and former lead COVID-19 investigator David Asher have suggested the virus most likely came from a lab in Wuhan, where the first virus clusters surfaced.

    A
fact sheet from the State Department, released during the last days of the Trump Administration, suggested that several researchers in the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) fell ill in autumn 2019 with symptoms similar to COVID-19.

“There’s enormous evidence that that’s where this began,” Pompeo said of the lab on ABC’s “This Week” on May 1. “We have said from the beginning that this was a virus that originated in Wuhan, China. We took a lot of grief for that from the outset. But I think the whole world can see now.”

Pompeo noted that the Chinese regime has “a history of running sub-standard laboratories.”

“These are not the first times that we have had the world exposed to viruses as a result of failures in a Chinese lab,” he said. He declined to say if he believes the virus was intentionally released.

WIV houses China’s only P4 lab, the highest biosafety level lab. It has worked for years with Chinese military leaders on state-funded projects.

Years before the pandemic, Chinese military scientists had discussed plans to unleash a bioengineered SARS coronavirus to advance Beijing’s goals.
