Former USC defensive tackle Ryan Nielsen could be a leading candidate for the open defensive coordinator position, according to one source. He is currently the defensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints, and he's considered a hot commodity in the NFL. He helped turn the Saints into a force against the run and in the pass rush. He's also a former DL coach and recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State, where he had great success recruiting and developing his players.

Never heard of him, but that description sounds just like someone they need.

I loved what Nielsen did at North Carolina State and always thought he'd be a great addition here. His development of defensive linemen at NC State was really impressive. He was a big part of NC State having four defensive linemen taken in the 2018 NFL Draft -- Bradley Chubb (Denver Broncos), B.J. Hill (New York Giants), Justin Jones (Los Angeles Chargers), and Kentavius Street (San Francisco 49ers). Chubb was a first-rounder and all four were selected in the first four rounds.

Would love this hire. Proven he can develop kids & send them off to the NFL. Being a d-line coach in the NFL to becoming a defensive coordinator for a prominent blue blood, let alone your Alma Mater should be very appealing. Make it happen, “Coach” Bohn!

Except that he's never been a DC. He hasn't had to run the entire defense.

Remember him as a great player at SC, graduated in 2002, and has always been a great position coach and recruiter. 14 years of coaching DL. Highly regarded in NFL and moving up. I think we're in for a lot of rumors.

At this point SC is going to have to take a flyer on a DC candidate. I can't imagine any well established DC with an ounce of self-esteem could handle taking orders from Helton. Plus, while I'm generally am against the hiring of former players, I think bringing a player like Nielsen and Chris Claiborne back would be a smart move. As well as alienating the fan base, they've done the same to former Trojan greats.

I say open the checkbook for Venables and promise him that he will have the first shot at being the HC once they fire Helton.

He has a promise to be HC at Clemson if Swinney leaves. I doubt he's gettable.

He was defensive coordinator at FCS Central Connecticut for 2 years and co-defensive coordinator at Northern Illinois. But he has never been a DC at this level. Still, Helton had never been a head coach at ANY level and Haden hired that goober. This guy looks like the most qualified man in the world compared to the Helton hire.

This post just points out how how moronic the whole situation is. Why do we have to have a continuity plan for the inevitability of Helton getting canned? Just can this loser already and open up the coaching search. We already lost the bowl and blew the pledge class. What’s the harm now?

I don't think Swinney is going anywhere in the next decade at least. Frank Howard was there for like 30 years, Danny Ford for like 12, even Tommy Bowden lasted 9-10 years. Swinney has outperformed the best coaches Clemson has ever had. He's a legend already. IPTAY has a lot of power and would never allow Swinney to go anywhere unless for some bizarre reason he has like 5 mediocre seasons in a row. Dabo is still young at age 50 and he's making $9.3M per year in a conference that he can fall asleep and still win. Bama would be the only other option for him, but I think that he knows what he has at Clemson and IPTAY will fork over whatever it takes to keep him there.

Venables is 49, if he's going to become a head coach, he needs to do it sometime in the next 5 seasons. Right now he makes $1.7M. Pretty sure he'd come to SC for $2.5M.

It would be much better for me to win the Powerball as well, but that's not happening. I think we all need to get to the Acceptance Phase of the grieving process. The administration loves the "squeaky clean" persona that Clay Helton brings to the HC position so they aren't firing him anytime soon. We need to accept that as reality. So what else can we do? Pray that they give him the right Coordinators and Position Coaches that can overcome his lack of coaching abilities. I think that's where we are and all of the screaming and complaining in the world won't change that...if it hasn't yet. So let's focus our attention on what we might be able to affect, the Coordinators...I think we have an adequate OC, now to get a stud DC. If Helton give the same autonomy to the DC that he has given to the OC, we might see some significant changes.

If he really is a hot commodity for the NFL then why would he be interested in becoming a DC for a college team?

He'd need to go one step further and let the OC/DC schedule and run the practices. Basically become a head coach with no coaching responsibilities.

Because it's a step up from DL coach and it could pave the way to being the next HC of a major college program?
