Oregon can’t stop the run particularly well. In its other Pac-12 games, Oregon gave up an average of 184 yards rushing per game. UCLA gashed them for 267. Oregon State dropped 269 rushing yards on them.

USC had 38, by far the worst rushing performance against Oregon this year.

USC also had the worst rushing performance by any team against Arizona this year.

USC also had the worst rushing performance by any team against Washington State this year.”

An average team with a 3-2 record, a team which has been picked as a substitute for the North Division team, comes to town and dominates the South Division champs on their own home field and beats them for the second time in a row(this time less embarrassingly). If you were a Trojan, it was so painful to watch this game because from the beginning to the end you would see the glaring coaching and team ineptitudes: boneheaded, killer penalties, lack of discipline, lack of motivation and training, poor rushing attack, and poor time management. It is an elementary knowledge in football that the most important position in any football team is the offensive line and to have any chance of winning any championship, is implementing a balanced passing and running scheme. Under the present head coach, these two basic, elementary issues, despite being mentioned to him repeatedly, have been completely ignored. No team has ever won any meaningful championship with just passing. In last night game, all the pressure was placed on the shoulder of the QB to win the game. The dropped passes, poor officiating, stupid penalties, lack of discipline, and extremely poor coaching were laid bare in this game. The SC fans should embrace themselves for a painful season when the team goes through its regular schedule next year. We all know that under the present head coach USC is not going to be a championship-caliber team. In addition to having a mediocre record, it could also lose a few games in the usual embarrassing way.

Cristobal was basically flaunting last nights win to future SoCal recruits that if you want to win come play at Oregon. We own LA even in its own backyard! This madness has got to stop. The door is wide open with Helton at the helm for all to poach our local recruits.
    Fight On!

SC fans lets wise up and take advantage of this situation. Do like I did open a Sportsbook account and score big time. For whatever reason Vegas Sportsbooks are drinking the kool-aid and giving you a tremendous opportunity. For the last 2 years I have been in the money thanks to Clay Helton. Vacations I never thought I could afford. Don't get me wrong, I love my Trojans. Season ticket holder for decades. But as Danny DeVeto says "Money talks, bullsh*t walks". I would love a new coach but until then...money talks.

Overstatement. USC with more total yards, first downs, equal in time of possession. I understand your sentiment if you're only looking at rushing yardage, but that's not the totality of a game. USC's defense was dominant at times--good all night-- and 14 points basically gifted to Ducks via Slovis. Trojans don't look good overall, but only a dramatic critic uses "dominated."

Disagree. They popped up 14 points in the first 8 minutes. Recruits aren't looking at the stats. They saw the replacement team come to LA, USC's home turf, and manage to look superior, finishing with a dance. That is dominance.

Disagree? With what? I virtually said the same thing you did? OK, I said "gifted"...you said "popped up"...
    Whatever.

I disagree with your opinion saying USC being dominated by the 2nd place team in the north was an "overstatement" or a dramatic critique. Nobody but USC fans, and few of them, will look at that game last night and see it any other way.

Thanks for the write up. I’m in total agreement with you about Clay being the worst head coach in USC’s history. This is starting to feel like we’re stuck on an island, without any form of help in sight..

Indeed, no need for sarcasm today from Chris.

Bitter truth... "Hasn’t enough damage already been done?"

    Wonderful column.

"But does supporting these players mean we have to pretend? That we can’t say what we all see, what we all know. "

Goddamn it, when are the people who control the program going to make a change?

We all assume with the right coach USC -- the "sleeping giant" -- can bounce back quickly to national relevancy. I worry that this may no longer be true.

Great analysis Chris. I am going to say something you probably are encouraged not to- Helton is an ignorant buffoon. He doesn't understand or respect USC's legacy and history. The damage he has doing makes take years to recover from.He also never owns a loss or bad performance, and instead takes about looking at film, the guys fought like Warriors, etc. He shows no passion.
Perhaps after another lackluster season with embarrassing defeats and terrible attendance, the administration(which doesn't seem to care) will be forced to make a move and send this sad sack packing.
He is probably the worst coach in all of Power 5 football.
