Bru McCoy was on the field today. He wasn’t in pads, but did take part in warmup lines and caught a few passes. Clay Helton said he is no longer having fevers, but this is just the start of a long road back to fully playing. Asked about the status of McCoy’s waiver, Helton said there was no change in the status. Asked if they’d filed a waiver, Helton said there was no change in the status. It’s a safe assumption that an NCAA waiver for immediate playing time has not been filed, and there is no rush to get him eligible for this season at this point.

Andrew Vorhees sat out again. Helton said it is a foot injury and there is no timetable for his return.

Greg Johnson was held out of practice as he goes through concussion protocol.

Christian Rector did participate in practice today.

We heard plenty of mentions of the words “execute” and “disciplined” during post-practice interviews today. There was also plenty of talk that the Utah game will be another game won in the trenches.

Graham Harrell confirmed that he called every play against BYU and said Clay Helton will sit in on things during the week, but he has been completely willing to let him call anything he sees fit this season.

There you go. GH is surprisingly candid for a football coach.

Unfortunately......if I were Slovis I'd make sure my life insurance was paid up. Of course the brain trust (running like a 1932 Buick) will keep a back in and the tight end available to help. Which will put even more folks in the box to help a line that will all be playing in the NFL next year......but don't you run boy. Stand up like a man and be true to our game plan.. Fink must be warming up. After that.....its whoever had a few snaps in high school. Is Helton eligible?

They have to say this whether accurate or not. Helton dictated the calls he is the HC and it was obvious. Harrell being a good loutenient

    Hey Erik,

Can you and your crew ask whoever is made available to the media each and every practice "Did you tackle today?"

Great to hear about Bru. I wasn’t expecting him to play this year anyway, just want him to get better.

I have a feeling if you asked if CCH “Did you tackle today?”, his answer would be “There is no change in the status”.

Why is Helton taking the fifth on Bru’s waiver status? Why can’t he just say they don’t plan to file one as they want him to redshirt.

Come on, man! Are you so out to prove Helton is a loser that you can't listen to what people are saying. Your take is off. The reality is that Harrell, in spite of his swagger, is a first time offensive coordinator at a big time school. Yes, he is learning to some extent as it goes. If nothing else, Helton has been a man of his word and I believe Helton/Harrell when they say Harrell is calling the plays. Helton has hitched his wagon to Harrell and he is his best chance to succeed.

In coach speak, these guys all have to be positive. I expect them, whether I like it or not, to say things like “we ran the ball well, or BYU dropped 8 just like we knew they would.”

But the difference in this place and a Bama (amongst many things really) is Saban (his assistants don’t get to give interviews) will never settle for moral victories.

Even when they win, he will say they need to do this better or that better. He never allows his program to get complacent. I think Urban Meyer was pretty much the same..

Here under Helton, he’s satisfied when they “play hard” or “run for 172 yards” even though they couldn’t run it when they needed to. He’s made his program content on losing, but as long as you did some really nice things.

Such a shame. That might work well with 2nd graders, but not for what is supposed to be an elite program.

    Pretty amusing...'
we knew they were going to attack us that way, but our defense in practice never does'...
and we are going to keep doing the same thing over and over even if the 'O' line can't do their job...its hellton ball.
they are still their own worst enemy...feel sorry for the troops, not the command

Even my high school FB team had a Scout D and O Team to mimic the looks of the opposing team for each upcoming game. This was in the late 80’s. Unbelievable that Slovis isn’t getting any looks at what the opposing D “may” throw at him. Going at it blind is definitely Helton ball

This requires actually practicing. Helton likes film study. Slovis probably saw tapes of some team playing defense against an air raid offense.

Being able to grow a beard does not mean you are fully matured or are willing to face the music if you have called a sour half of plays against BYU.

Loyal lieutenant or not, you do not run from sports writers and fans so you can have a private three year old temper tantrum for failing to do better at what you are paid a lot to do.

If a team takes on its coaches attitude, then at least man up and face the music like great sports competitor's do when losing a game or losing a match.

It's like GroundHog day all over again...

Just waiting to see who'll be the love of his life this season.
