No update to the official site’s roster and no announcement from USC yet, but John David Baker updated his twitter profile to reflect that he is the USC tight ends coach.

That move had been reported as happening by FootballScoop a little while ago. Baker is out recruiting in Texas right now.

Erik, at this point how many staff positions remain open (assuming DC is a done deal)? Thanks

USC lost Joe DeForest, Clancy Pendergast and John Baxter. With John David Baker sliding up and if (with your assumption) Todd Orlando is in as defensive coordinator, that would leave one spot left, with special teams still not covered.

Nansen probably moves to special teams. With both LB coaches gone (Pendergast, Deforest) someone has to take over that. Hopefully they hire Claiborne. But Orlando has done a lot of LB coaching too(even while DC), so he could double up on that.

As to JD Baker, isn't he supposed to be slot receiver coach too?

He's formally the inside receivers coach. This incorporates the TE more and was used to sell Yary. Although I don't know what our chances with him are now that Daniel Imatorbhebhe is back.

Daniel back to work on PhD on SC dime. Don’t count on him to play.

Nansen was terrible at ST's when he coached that a couple years back. Hope he's not the default there as a way to save $ or because Clay had not thought through the coverage of the coaches.

Nansen can recruit, everything else he's done is mediocre or inconclusive.

The better teams pay attention to detail on the margins (Strength & Conditioning/ST's). SC seemed like they were doing that when they brought Baxter in, but just like Monte/Clancy/Wilcox...he forgot how to coach (and had a terrible attitude about forgetting).

The mediocre teams throw "some dude" in there that's "good enough".

Don’t recall Nansen forgetting players numbers or not having 11 players on field

Why would a former SC quarterback be coaching Tight Ends?

Tee Martin used to coach USC WR’s. He was better at that than he was an OC.
