One dimensional thinkers are not good problem solvers. I.E. Not good management material.

The problem is Helton has not recruited an offensive line that can hold a D-line long enough for short yardage packages. No matter how many times Fink would line up behind a line and try short yardage, it would never work most of the time in real action.

His only recourse is to put the QB back as far as possible to give him more time to throw or a few extra steps for an RB to get some speed to make their own holes by lowering the shoulder. My guess is if Helton could somehow not look ridiculous lining up a QB as far back as a punter normally would, he would do it.

You could hope that you consistently go up against a defensive line that leaves a visibly gaping hole over the left guard on 4th-and-1.

This is unbelievable. Clay defers to Harrell rather than address the obvious.

News flash to both of you - Anyone who has ever played, coached or intently watched more than a quarter of football knows this. Slow developing plays on the goal line do not work. They never have, and they never will.

Are you trying to rationalize this crap? Helton is a fraud. So is Harrell. This is not rocket science.

And you wonder why we can't recruit 5* OL. The big uglies want to dominate. 4th and 1 QB sneak for the touchdown. Not this crap Helton and Scam run. Let us ( the OL ) get in there with the QB behind Center, a Fullback and RB. Let us blast them off the line. If we are going to play a gimmick Offense then I will sign somewhere else.

Exactly. I wonder what he looks at when he says, "We are going to look at the tape...blah blah blah"

Pray the AD calls him on the carpet & makes him put QB under center next 4&1

The problem is Helton refuses to ax Drevno. I would take our graduate assistants over Drevno in a minute. At least the players relate to them and will play for them. Oklahoma drill still allowed at practice?

Exactly. No way out. No salvation, up or down. The schedule is too weak to cause a crisis in the athletic department, and the the ability is too low to actually produce results in keeping with the talent and traditions. We're trapped.

“It’s sad.” Classic Clay Helton response instead of being accountable and making immediate corrective action that is blatant. Someone please hire Clay away...

Short yardage should not be an issue...it’s a design defect.
How about getting the QB under center and inserting a FB, so you don’t have to gain 5 yards on 4th and 1. Everyone knows Kedon isn’t going to run zone keeps. Our RB are legitimate so commit to the ground and pound/play action and red zone issues are resolved.

Additionally, it will shore up our run fits on defense. Chuck-and-duck spread teams DO NOT get you tough enough to play high caliber competition and I’m tired of 3-4 loss teams and sun bowl type invitations.

There are none so blind as those who refuse to see. John Heywood. If this wasn’t written in the 1500s I would swear it was someone watching Helton coach.

When the Bama, and ND game got canceled, it almost assured Helton would survive this season. Covid is causing a crisis everywhere, except Helton's bag just got more secure.

That's like the commander at Pearl Harbor suggesting that they keep a better lookout after all his ships were sunk. How about play action for once when the D is guessing run? How about spying the QB so he doesn't step up in the pocket and run 20+ yards before a defender touches him? How about sticking with one RB for more than two plays so they get into a rhythm? How about throwing to the TE when the D is playing that soft zone?

Yes, the assistants have likely mentioned it over, and over, and over. So they are themselves insane, by definition!

I am not convinced our line is that bad, what I am convinced is our play calling is very predictable.

    Our line is that bad....

but qb under center on the goal would help them a lot....
