a 50 year old special teams quality control analyst? Sounds like he has some baggage, The second coming of Callaway?

He’s recognized as one of the best special teams coaches in the nation and was thought to be the successor to his father at Kansas State until they opted to go in a different direction. He was special teams coach of the year in 2015, so his credentials are solid. Very good hire unless you have an axe to grind against anything Helton does.

Exactly. I think he had two all Big12 or AA Kickers during his time and his ST has never ranked worse than 40th in the nation. Remember he coached Lockett who was a big time ST player. We have some great weapons on ST so this is a home run hire. Hating Helton should have absolutely nothing to do with honest assessments of who we have hired for other staff....or recruits for that matter.

Very well put. I'm not a Helton fan, and I am as disappointed as most, but, the Helton hate has grown VERY STALE. It is what it is, everyone.
I'd like to think I am a fair man. This is a VERY solid hire.

Wow, a refreshing thread with posters actually giving credit where credit is due. Good hire, agreed.

A step up from Nansen on ST's, but I'd imagine a step down for recruiting overall.

I don't care so much about Snyder's "success" with punters/kickers, as I think our current players have that mostly figured out, and doubt a new coach is going to fix much on that end (mystery of Griffen's 30+ yard punts in games vs. legendary practice punts). I'm more concerned with coverages and returns. Desperately need to improve on that!

He had to get rid of Wilcox. Wilcox was part of the bro crew, and he knew that it was Helton that dropped the dime on Sark to Haden.
Assistant coaches all start to reflect the culture of the head coach.

The only thing Helton has figured out is the politics of HH. He hasn't shown a damn thing as a HC or decision maker.

Hiring coaches is not a "Set it & Forget it" type of thing. A HC that acts as an executive has to ensure the DC's vision still aligns with his, the DC's effectiveness, the recruiting situation, how the DC manages his defensive assistants etc.

Clancy may have been the right call for a couple years, but a HC needs to stop the bleeding, or replace the DC. Clancy has been bleeding for like 3 yrs, and was let go 2 yrs too late.

Helton allows things to fester until his hand is forced; either by fans w/ pitchforks or an AD tired of getting 200 txts per day about replacing a coach. We've all but bled out, before Helton decides to put on the tourniquet...

Helton really got lucky with this one. Pretty lucky with Harrell returning and Orlando coming in as DC too.

I wouldn't say that. Clancy on his worst day was better than Wilcox was at USC.

Hopefully the purse strings have been opened up a lot, as you need money to attract good assistants.

That's what ST means though it means that his whole unit were very good.

Excellent hire. Mike Bohn's stepping up financially. It's great to have a special teams coach that would rather have a punter punt the ball 60 yards forward rather than 100 feet straight up.

“K-State’s special-teams units were one of the most consistent in the nation under his tutelage as the Wildcats set or tied eight team records since 2011, while Wildcats etched their names at the top of 20 individual marks. Snyder coached players to 27 total All-America honors and 21 All-Big 12 honors. K-State also boasted the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year in three consecutive seasons "

I've seen several reports that say Snyder was demoted. Chris Klieman is going in a new direction. Also its common knowledge Bill Snyder lobbied for him to be the next head coach and it was rebuffed. Then he had an off year in 2019 and Coach Chris Klieman reassigned him to a non coaching position.

So. Did he come here because he was a disgruntled employee without a job or did he really want to work with Clay Helton?

Same thing with Orlando. Dude was fired and humbled to an assistant position not the wonder boy DC status he had before . A guy who was demoted is an easy hire.

I do think both will be upgrades. Especially Orlando and if Snyder can count to 11 and field them unlike Baxter he will be an instant improvement.

I'm very optimistic about Todd Orlando. I see a little old school football swag in him.

looks like Tom Herman interviewed him too.
