I have never shot a .556 Cal rifle, is the recoil substantial and can my wife shoot it with some training. I have an opportunity to purchase a new Rugar mini Camp gun, bolt action and will only consider it if my wife can handle it.

5.56 is the same caliber in the M16. It really does not have much of a kick. It is a typical NATO round. The AR 15 which is the precursor of the M16 uses it. There are bunch of other rifles that use this round that are non-military grade rifles.

The. 5.56 is a little longer .22 round on steroids. But it isn't a heavy recoil round at all. But guns that shoot a 5.56 round look a lot 'scarier' than a basic Ruger 10/22 rifle.

In fact,i'd say there's really no recoil to speak of.

Most women have no problem shooting rifle calibers up to a .243. The 223/5.56 in a gas-operated semi-auto rifle has minimal recoil and most women (and men) love shooting that caliber.

The gas system makes the recoil negligible. Now a bolt action rifle will have a bit more recoil unless it’s been ported, but like I said, I’ve never had a women complain about shooting anything smaller than a 243 like the 5.56.

    Go for it!

Short video showing how the recoil affects a 7-year old girl.

Speaking of rifles, anyone have experience with the Ruger PC9 rifle? I find the fact that it can use the Glock magazine and also break down easily interesting. Just can't find any gun store in California that has it in stock.

I've got one. I'm a newbie with rifles. I can operate it well though, and I'm enjoying going to the range with my dad. 9mm ammo is sparce at my local stores. Glock clip works though and its pretty easy to break down.

If you have any hesitation or are a beginner, get a shoulder pad. It will help you focus and not be concerned about recoil. I used a vest one time that apparently didn't have enough paddling. I had a black rectangular bruise on my should for a couple weeks.
