Is this a surprise since he committed to Drevno?

It's early but no linemen is not a good look.

    ND has a couple already.

    But that's who they are.

And that's not who we are ... anymore.

The real question is did we try to keep him? My guess is no.

When was the last time we recruited a top tier OL since we started running this shitty “Gimmicky” pass all the time offense? Top tier lineman want to put their hand on the ground and drive someone’s ass off the line of scrimmage...oh “that’s not who we are” . Until that changes, don’t expect to see a whiff of a top tier lineman coming to play at USC.

I agree, but the Utah coach seems to be able to take a whole bunch of three star recruits and crank out some awfully good teams with strong running games. I’m hopeful the new staff can develop some of the big wide bodies we have into top tier O Linemen!

So does every other top program. The majority of starting OL on the top tier teams are 3 star linemen.

Agree....there’s probably only 3-5 OLmen rated at 5* each year....and maybe another 8-12 total rated 4*.

Just taking a look at the numbers for some recent classes.

In the 2019 class, there were 60 four or five-star offensive linemen. USC signed one (Jason Rodriguez). Washington signed three. Notre Dame signed four.

In the 2020 class, there were 49 four or five-star offensive linemen. USC signed one (Jonah Monheim). Stanford and Washington each signed three. Georgia and Oklahoma each signed four.

In the 2021 class, there were 52 four or five-star offensive linemen. USC signed none. Oregon signed four. Notre Dame signed three. Alabama signed five. Ohio State signed three.

Thanks, Eric, this paints the picture the way it is and what has to change.

I would say through experience that many recruits are offered but the Admin (either USC or Alabama) decide they need to make room so they just stop calling them. That works almost every time.
