According to multiple family members, former USC linebacker Damon Bame passed away this past Friday, June 26.

Bame was a junior college transfer and became a starting linebacker on the 1962 USC team that went undefeated, shut out three opponents, only allowed 92 points the entire season (just 55 in the regular season) and beat Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.

Listed at just 5-foot-11 and 192 pounds, Bame also played offensive guard for the Trojans. He was an All-American in both 1962 and 1963 and was named the USC Lineman of the Year for both seasons.

Bame’s family members announced his passing in an email and social media posts.

In their time they were known as the ( B - Boys ) Damon Bame, Hal Bedsole, Willie Brown, Pete Bethard, and Big Ben Wilson
They were all huge factors in John McKay's first national title in 1962.

I was 12 when he played but remember him well. What I really remember is how good these linemen were at sizes that were a fraction of what players play at today.

Damon Bane was my original favorite Trojan. I really started following USC during that 1962 season. He was very quick and just ferocious. He averaged double digits tackles both those seasons. USC was running a 50 slant defensive during those seasons and Bane was what they called the scrap off backer. The line slanted and protected the backers and he was able to use his quickness to penetrate and make a lot of tackle behind the line of scrimmage.

8 years later, I was playing at MSAC under Veryl Lillywhite. Bill Fisk, Jr and Stan Gonta former USC Trojans were coaching on that team. We were running USC defense and I was playing the scrap off backer. Bane came out to work with us a couple of times that season. He was a really nice guy. But, you could look in his eyes when he started talking about the position and you could see the look of a warrior.

    RIP noble Trojan

Words can never express how the loss of a loved one, (not just a Trojan, but a Trojan player) my heart goes out to your family, friends and special people in your circle. I ask God to comfort your soul as I know he will. God, please ease the pain and hurt in anyway you can to all those who are/were close to him and were touched by Damon Ban. RIP my brother

One of my all time favorites....I want to puke every time I hear brunes called "gutty little" brunes. They never had a single one as gutty as Damon Bame, remarkably undersized and a two way player.

He was all guts when he played. I met him a few times at Trojan parties and he loved being a Trojan. He had that gleam in his eye when telling old stories. God Bless.
