There are schools out there who are excelling athletically, academically, and can raise funds. Those names are in the media quite a bit. Heck I would have added McGarity from UGa and Alleva from LSU but LSU's academic resume sucks and McGarity isn't going anywhere for awhile.
His job experience doesn't match up with being an AD in college. His long-term ties to the NFL would be looked at with a wary eye. His ties to USC. His head is in the pro game, not Div 1 athletics. And I honestly think we need someone who is doing the job of an AD right now.

Thanks! I guess I was mistaken in thinking he had some recent D1 Athletic Director experience between the Arena League and the Hall of Fame gig. Upon reflection, I would also guess that the landscape of the job has probably changed a lot in recent years, so it does make sense that you'd want someone currently in that position.

BTW, that's not to say he doesn't possess some skill sets that would be above and beyond what we will end up getting. His negotiation and people skills are outstanding. He can fundraise. He has a passion for football and for athletes. He loves to celebrate the game! I have no doubt that if he'd had the job, USC would be in a completely different situation with the Pac 12, particularly regarding the TV deal.

At this point, what makes me nervous about ANY hire, is the pressure to cave to current PC trends. I really just want the best person, not the one who checks the most socially conscientious boxes.

I don't think he's a good fit for AD. But, would be a homerun for Pac-12 Commissioner (who wouldn't be better than Scott, right?)

What about MIchigan. They seem to be good at all the major sports.

It was all that UC Irvine athletic excellence that got Guerrero his job....

I don't know much about their AD but his resume looks pretty good. Harbaugh was hired before he took over but he's not looking great so far this season. I still think Phillips from Northwestern is a great fit.

We have had Football HCs becoming AD (Jess Hill, John McKay). I would love to get Pete back as our AD but probably not possible. So lets make Helton the AD. First order of business is to find his own replacement as HC, with marching orders to contact Urban and Stoops with Harrell as the backup plan.

I'm not saying I like either Meyer or Stoops as my first choices, but I don't think Harrell's earned his stripes to be considered in the HC conversation.

If (in your scenario) Helton takes over as AD, I'm not smart enough to know who should take over as HC, but hope that those in decision-making positions are.

We live in upstate NY, not far from West Point. Here's my endorsement for the new AD: Boo Corrigan
Who is he say you? Show me an Intercollegiate Athletic program with more measurable success over the last five years than the US Military Academy. Top Drawer Foltzy! Take a look....
