After Bohl announced that he was leaving to become the head coach of Wyoming, then athletic director Gene Taylor promoted Klieman to become the 30th head football coach in Bison history in 2014.

After winning three consecutive National Championships and going 43–2 since 2011, the expectations for the 2014 team were not high. The Bison had lost their starting quarterback and a total of 30 seniors that graduated before the season started. But 2014 surprised everyone when he and future 2nd overall NFL draft pick Carson Wentz led the Bison to a 15–1 overall record and a fourth consecutive national championship by beating Illinois State in a close, hard-fought championship game. NDSU became the first Division 1 football program to win four consecutive championships.

In 2015, the Bison continued their winning ways and ended the season 13–2 with a fifth consecutive national championship, the most by any NCAA football program in history.

In 2016, the Bison again won their conference title, but lost in the FCS semifinals to James Madison, their first playoff loss in 6 years. They ended the year at 12–2, their sixth straight season with double-digit wins. The 2017 season continued the Bison dominance by again going 10–1 and winning their seventh consecutive MVFC title and avenging the previous years loss to James Madison by beating them in the Championship Game 17–13. It is Klieman's third National Championship in four seasons and the Bison's sixth in seven years.

Chris Klieman would be the smart choice to replace Helton...it'll never happen.

Figurehead Lynn Swann isn't that smart.

Swann isn't coming out of hiding for anyone at this point. He made an appearance to calm the calls for Helton's head, but that was it. Swann is like Punxsutawney Phil, you won't see him for about another year.

When was the last time an FCS coach had success at a Big-5 program nationally?
Not trying to stir things up, seriously asking.

Harbaugh had a football pedigree. I don't know about Kleiman, there's too many variables. If USC hires him, we would either look like geniuses or total lunatics.

You don't build a resume like Klieman's without knowing how to coach.

Interesting choice...would he swap the North Dakota life for LA? The pay is definitely more.

    X's and O's, for sure.
I think the concern would be how he goes from handling FBS rejects to 5-star prima donna players. From a coaching and recruiting standpoint.

I'm usually on the fence about a guy who is making a jump up in competition.

However this guy dominates and that does not happen often. He's clearly special and I think he would be successful in the Pac 12 very quickly.

I guess it would come down to just how badly the prima donnas want to win. Being properly coached up with a chance to bring out their potential and have a shot at the next level is probably worth a shot...for all involved.

Kliemans predecessor Craig Bohl a three time National FBS Champion at ND State jumped to the MWC Wyoming, he is mid pack to mediocre after 5 years. I have no doubts it is easier to recruit at ND State being in Fargo right on the Minnesota border than Wyoming with a population less than Ventura County.

Here's another: this guy is 53-11 at Boise St--37-3 in league play! His name is Dan Hawkins. I hear Colorado may get him if we don't offer first!!

Jim Tressell came out of Youngstown St. to win a National Championship for Ohio State. At Youngstown he won an FCS National Championship in a real playoffs format. Chip Kelly came out of New Hampshire and had great success at Oregon. There are a lot of fine coaches at FCS. It's football, there aren't a lot of ways to coach football. Notice how a majority of teams run the spread offense and run the same defenses. It ain't nuclear physics.

Good point, except, recruiting for Wyoming does not equal recruiting for SC. SC brings 4 and 5 stars to the table. Klieman would just have to close them. 3 or 4 national championships in 5 years would do that, no questions asked...
