“Southern Cal”???

I don't correct anything anyone says, but I always just say "SC."
We own those two letters. I can't think of another school that can say that.
Every other two letter nickname has the "U" in it. "IU, "UK," "KU," "UT." And "U-Dub" even is slang, no one says "UW"

Anyway, we own the S and the C.
We are SC and no one else is.

I'm not going to read every post but I read 2 pages worth. The media guide used to make a point that USC wasn't to he referred to as "Southern Cal". I remember this from the PC era for some reason and I'm sure it goes way back. Can someone check an old media guide? I have stacks from the 70s and 80s but not handy.

It was NOT Mike Garrett who started the "don't call us Southern Cal". It was started by Tim Tessalone the former press director in the late 1970s - early 1980s, way before Garret and the 90s.

 

Tessalone is the current Sports Information Director.

 

So-cal, Southern Cal, USC, it doesn’t matter to me , as long as you call us winners after Saturday’s game

As I recall McKay wasn’t keen on referring to USC as Southern Cal. I remember him correcting a reporter at one of his famous post game interviews. Probably why Garrett has the same position.

 

I think it was our buddy Lou Holtz who while he was at Notre Dame and later on ESPN thought it was funny and insulting to refer to USC as Southern Cal based upon Tessalone's stipulation in his press guides that Southern Cal was not to be used to identify USC. Given the fact that Lou has moved away from any media appearances and now appears only in the background in his green Masters coat during the Masters tournament nobody really cares that much.

I think I actually saw on the Fanatics sportswear site awhile back this year a sweatshirt with Southern Cal Trojans printed on it.

Would agree with SCnAZ - call USC whatever you want as long as our team is a winner

“Southern Cal” was around long before Tessalone, and will be around long after.

As someone who lives in Texas I come across a lot of ol Big 8, SWC and SEC fans....they all refer to USC as Southern Cal.

 

That's how they say it but we know better because

WE ARE SC as in The University of SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA as in the REAL USC

good grief....SC bookstore had Southern Cal hats and shirts. Keith Jackson used the term. It has history. It was only recently it was considered bad. Like anyone would confuse SC with Berkeley. It's insulting.
