Now that we have all that out of the way, another query: has anyone in the history of the game failed up like Helton? And now he’s going to very likely walk away with 15 million. You won the lottery you fraud - and you should give at least half to Sam Darnold. Also, does it shock anyone that JT wants him to stick around? He’s the only person left in the world who thinks Staredown should start.

Angry. Worried. Disgusted. Tired. But feeling a bit better that I got to write “cornpone.”

 

From the frying pan to the fire. I remember when people were saying Kiffin always falls up. I'm not one to pile on the coaches. But can we at least finally acknowledge that what Kiffin managed to hold together --- under the circumstances -- was quite remarkable. Even when we were down to 55 scholarship players traveling, it never got this bad.

For the record, I like the "cornpone" guy, too. It is nice to have a good, clean-cut guy as the head of the program. I hope he can turn things around. Beat the Irish and Fight on!

 

Let's not lionize Kiffin, he was an asshole who had some success here in the beginning -- just like CCH -- and then it all turned to shit. It started with his insistence on starting Max Wittek, his refusal to play Buck Allen, and a host of other bad decisions.

My sharpest memory of Kiffin is of him standing alone on the sidelines of the Sun Bowl, completely isolated from his team. And when your guys give up 60 points to ASU the following year, there is little good left to say. Just like this year, things nosedived, and Kiffin didn't know what to do to turn things around.

 

No need to get personal. Clay is a nice guy who was a decent OC, but is just in WAY over his head as HC.

I don't blame Clay. I blame the guy that hired him.

The “Miss Angela” thing has been explained adequately here as a Southern tradition. Helton doesn’t need to explain, or ignore, his upbringing.....just his crappy coaching.

As far as JT, it’s just what any player should publicly say to the question posed. It’s about class, and at least the young fella shows that much.

No, Mrs. Kiffin, your boy was anything but remarkable as USC's HC. He was and always will be the poster child for failing upwards. Who can ever forget the endless bubble screens for minus-3 yards? Or taking a preseason #1-ranked team and turning it into a putrid 7-6 mess of wasted talent? Or the Sun Bowl debacle when his players quit on him and then mutinied? You keep clinging to your fawning memories of the Kiffin years. We know better.

 

Kiffin was quite good in 2011. I don't know how he went from 10-2 in 2011 to 7-6 in 2012 while also losing the players and his assistants, but he did.

 

Miss Angela is a term of endearment. The Helton's have their reason. Trying to mind read what it means to them is preposterous. Projecting what it means to you onto them is absurd.

Understand your frustration with Clay, but he is and always will be Southern. Living in the South most of my post-SC life, there is frequent use of Miss or Mr., usually with respect. I actually like the open sense of respect this represents. If you have gone to SC games in the South, they always have respect for their opponents, unlike Oregon, Arizona and schools in the West. If you don't like it fine, but don't diss the man for being true to who he is.

 

So true. Went to the Auburn in '03, got invited to nearly every tailgate I passed and ended up having dinner after the game with a group of Auburn fans. They were totally cool both before and after the game, so much so that I didn't even admonish them for referring to us as Southern Cal ; )
