USC weekend recruiting wrap

By Carson Marsh

It’s an interesting time in regard to recruiting at USC right now, as the Trojans will go more than a month without a real opportunity to host recruits at a home game. USC was away this past weekend, then hosts Utah on a Friday night – when a huge majority of recruits will be playing in their own games – then has two away games and a bye over the following three weeks. USC is also embarking on a run of games that could have a huge say in how much attention recruits give to the Trojans, as games against Utah, Washington, and Notre Dame could go a long way toward generating momentum or stalling it completely.

2021 Visitors

The Trojans did have a few prospects on campus this past Sunday. The most notable was 2021 linebacker Raesjon Davis (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei), a top-30 prospect in his class and a top target for the Trojans, and national programs.

USC also a numbers of players from Desert Edge High School in Goodyear, Arizona, including four-star cornerback Steven Ortiz, in the 2021 class.

QB Bryce Young led Mater Dei to a 34-18 victory over nationally ranked St. Frances Academy. Snapping St. Frances’s 26 game win streak, Young went 19-for-30 for 250 passing yards while also accumulating 104 rushing yards and 4 rushing touchdowns. Mater Dei plays away to St. Johns of Washington DC this Friday.

WR Joshua Jackson Jr. and Narbonne took down Orange Lutheran 38-0 last Friday. Jackson recorded 4 receptions for 103 yards in a strong performance from the senior. Narbonne plays home to Serra of Gardena this Friday.

TE Jack Yary and Murrieta Valley defeated Roosevelt 43-17 over the weekend. Yary recorded 2 catches for 40 yards and 1 receiving touchdown, as well as 2 rushing touchdowns on only 3 total carries. Murrieta Valley plays home to Oaks Christian on Friday.

DT Jamar Sekona and the Marin Catholic Wildcats blanked Monterrey by a score of 41-0. Sekona and Marin’s defense wreaked havoc and stifled Monterrey’s offense. Marin plays away to Antioch on Friday.

DT Kobe Pepe and St. John Bosco beat Our Lady of Good Counsel (Bellflower, CA) last Friday. Pepe led all defenders with an outstanding 14 total tackles, 11 of which were solo tackles. St. John Bosco look to stay unbeaten when they play at Mililani of Hawaii this Saturday.

OT Joey Wright and Bishop Monague of Reno rebounded from a forfeiture loss last week with a 57-7 win against McQueen. Bishop Monague’s offensive line – led by senior Joey Wright – secured running room for their tail backs as the offense recorded 362 rushing yards and 5 rushing touchdowns. Bishop Monague plays away to Reed in Sparks, Nevada next Friday.

OG Kyle Juergens and the St. Margaret Tartans had their bye week this week and look to play El Toro of Lake Forest on Friday.

OLB Ma’a Gaoteote and St. John Bosco defeated Our Lady of Good Counsel by a score of 31-8. Gaoteote recorded 6 total tackles (4 solo, 2 assist) in the defensive rout. St. John Bosco plays away at Mililani of Hawaii this Saturday.

DT Jay Toia (photo above) and the defense of Grace Brethren recorded a shutout of Oak Hills by a score of 48-0. Toia and the defensive line stepped up and played a pivotal role in not allowing Oak Hills to score a single point in the game. Grace Brethren of Simi Valley has its bye this week and plays home to Westlake on Friday, September 27th.

WR Velltray Jefferson and the Edison Tigers were defeated by Clovis North by a down-to-the-wire score of 41-40. For the fourth straight week, Edison has been defeated and now sits with a record of 0-4 on the year. Edison looks to record its first win when they play Dinuba on Friday on neutral field.

Recruiting Notes

Plenty of talk picking up about USC commit Bryce Young and a possible flip to Alabama, as several Alabama-based reporters have flipped their 247 crystal ball picks to the Crimson Tide. This is going to be something to monitor and something where a potential coaching change, or not, could play a role.

2020 3 star WR Loic Fouonji (Midland, Texas/Lee) received an offer from the USC Trojans. Fouonji, 6-foot-4, 194-pounds, is a multi-sport athlete, playing football, soccer, track, and basketball. He has notable offers from Oklahoma State and Texas.

Another running back target committed elsewhere, as three-star back Ty Jordan (Mesquite, Texas/West Mesquite) announced his commitment to Texas. Jordan was one of several Texas-based recruits that USC hosted over the summer, and so far the Trojans haven’t had any luck in getting commitments from any of them. Jordan joins fellow running back and USC target Bijan Robinson (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) in the Longhorns’ 2020 class.
