Recruiting Notebook: All-Star games edition

Now that the college football season is over it’s time to turn the attention this week to the high school all-star games and a look at some of the future Trojans in action. It also means the televised commits during the game broadcasts and there is a big one anticipated during the Army game on Sunday when Mater Dei WR Amon-Ra St. Brown will choose from USC, Notre Dame and Stanford.

This isn’t a minor deal with St. Brown’s announcement as he is clearly the best wide receiver we’ve seen in action this year, and the latest rumor winds are all blowing in the direction of him becoming a Trojan.

Amon-Ra (5-11, 190) could fit in nicely either in the slot or outside in the USC passing scheme and what makes him particularly dangerous is his strength when the ball is in the air, and then his run-after-catch ability once the ball is in his hands. He’s the son of a former Mr. Universe, which explains the strength, and he grew up with two older brothers who now play Division 1 receiver, which explains the competitiveness to make a play.

It’s been a long-and-winding road for St. Brown to potentially wind up at SC considering his older brothers are now at Notre Dame and Stanford, but Amon-Ra started really feeling the Trojans last spring and he brought his parents to a Trojan spring practice, from that point on it feels like the Trojans have laid the groundwork for him to commit, and it certainly doesn’t hurt to have his Mater Dei QB JT Daniels already in the fold as a commit, and in his ear all week during Army game practices.

The Army game will air on Saturday, January 6th at 10am PT on NBC.

Here’s a listing of other USC prospects or commits in the game:

QB JT Daniels #18
WR Amon-Ra St. Brown #8
OL Justin Dedich #57
OL Penei Sewell #61
DL Michael Thompson #92
LB Palaie Gaoteote #10
LB Raymond Scott #26
DB Talanoa Hufanga #15
DB Isaac Taylor-Stuart #6

** LB Solomon Tuliaupupu #55 (injured, will not play)

As a side note, it’s been well documented that this will be the final year of the Army sponsorship of this game, and that is a shame. The Army was with the game from the beginning and helped promote it and grow it locally in San Antonio to help it become the game that it is today. It’s hard to imagine the event organizers will be able to find a better partner moving forward, thanks Army for all that you did.

The Under-Armour game will be played this Thursday, January 4th on ESPN and while there won’t be as many USC commits or targets, there are still a few notable reasons to watch.

WR Devon Williams and CB Olaijah Griffin both have SC on their short lists although right now I don’t project either player in the Trojan class. Tyreke Smith took an official visit to USC but there has not been much noise lately on him regarding the Trojans.

Here’s an updated list of players who have signed from the early signing period/JC period:

RB Markese Stepp
OL Justin Dedich
OL Liam Douglass
DT Caleb Tremblay
OLB Abdul-Malik McClain
OLB Kana’I Mauaga
ILB Raymond Scott
ILB Palaie Gaoteote
DB Chase Williams
DB Talanoa Hufanga

There are also four verbal commits who have yet to sign:

DT Trevor Trout
DT Tuli Letuligasenoa
DB Marcus Johnson
QB JT Daniels

It’s unclear at this point how many available spots the Trojans have, as that number won’t be known until we know how many players are leaving early for NFL draft, potential transfers, etc. It’s estimated that the number will be somewhere around 18.
