Pete's Arboblog: Always Something Going On

by:GarryP12/10/14
from Pete Arbogast, the voice of the Trojans: No matter the season, there’s always something going on around SC! The men’s basketball team is improving as expected, and while too young to make a run at league honors, will be a very god team next year and a real player after that. The women are playing really well in the pre-season, and figure to be in the upper half of the Pac-12 under Coop. The water polo team did us proud by making another NCAA championship match, but their string of 6 straight titles came to an end.  Next year, we will, however, make it 7 of 8. And you can hardly dislike an USC-Nebraska game in late December in Southern California. Two good teams with good records and great histories.  This is going to be one of the best bowl games matchups outside of the final four all season long. Buy those stocking stuffers for the SC fan in your life and let’s go match the Big Red’s fan base at the Murph. Yes, I’ve called a game there—a wild one—Marshall Faulk led Aztecs of SDSU should have won that day but for two missed field goals late, and we escaped with a 31-31 draw.  I think it was 1991.  Now I’ll go look it up………Nope missed by a year, it was ’92.  In the ’91 opener we lost to Memphis (that MUSY be a printer’s error, right?) Interestingly, after the tie, the following week we went to Norman and whipped the Sooners 20-10.  Then lost to Washington before winning 4 straight to rise to #11 in the polls but faded down the stretch. Lost to the Bruins when we went for two but didn’t get it at the end.  Went 6-4-1 and lost to Fresno State in the Freedom Bowl and that was it for Larry Smith as JR came back in the following season. ** Bowl season you say…why, yes I’d like more college football very much, thank you. First, other teams that we played this year out of conference: Hawaii Bowl-Fresno State vs. Rice.  I’ll root for Fresburg just because it makes us look better if they win.  They probably will. Pinstripe: Boston College over Penn State.  Wanna play in NYC in December?  Me neither. Music City:  LSU over Notre Dame, and Irish with a lovely finish for 2014. Pac-12 teams: Los Vegas: Utah will have its hands full of Colorado State but will pull away at the end. Sun: Arizona State destroys Duke. Cactus: Oklahoma State over Washington, denying the conference of a perfect bowl record. Chicken: Will Maryland score against Stanford?  Trees win. Alamo: Bruins take K. State in Hundley’s farewell.  Mora’s too? Fiesta: Arizona over Boise State.  Cat’s similar but bigger than the Broncs. Rose: Oregon over Florida State.  Kind of like the old “East vs. West” Rose setup before the Big 10 affiliation came along in the 40’s.  If we could guarantee matchups like this all the time, I think we could all grow to like the East-West game. National final: Alabama over Oregon.  Until the Ducks prove they can handle enormous and fast defensive front 7’s in big games, it says here they don’t. It’d be nice to shut the SEC honks up though, wouldn’t it? ** Celebrated a birthday with a “zero” at the end of it last week.  Paul McDonald and his wife were there, along with many great long time friends.  J could not make it due to HS football. Thanks to all for the good wishes. Anybody up for caroling on December 20? Los Feliz area we meet at 6:00 pm, 1726 Hillhurst, LA 90027 at Home Restaurant.  All welcome, kids invited, we’ll be going till about 8:30. Fight on!
