Day 2 of USC spring ball practice had Clay Helton talking about the impact of having all three coordinators returning, and how he sees that impact in communication among the players, “that’s something that has really stuck out to me so far”. Helton talked about the way the secondary is playing, and how they are on top of all the motions and shifts from the offense.

One of the big keys today was the presence of Marvell Tell at safety. Helton had originally said Tell could be out until after spring break but Marvell was out there today and made his presence felt early after Jack Sears threw a ball that was tipped by Cameron Smith and then picked by Tell and returned for a touchdown. In the same drill we saw a nice sweep run from Dominic Davis that flashed his speed. Davis put a shake move later in the practice on early enrollee Chase Williams that left Williams grasping for air.

Sears had a beautiful throw down the middle of the field to Josh Falo. Jack took the first reps of the day as Helton talked about alternating and giving everyone a chance to go with the 1’s. Iman Marshall had terrific coverage against Trevon Sidney and batted a ball away. Ykili Ross did a nice job of holding the edge on a Velus sweep to hold the play to no gain. Ajene Harris had an interception of a Matt Fink pass. Sears to Sidney on a deep completion.

Connor Murphy is at 260 pounds right now, and says he needs to add 4-5 pounds per month until the season starts to help make the move inside. “Connor has length and could grow into a Rasheem-Green-type body”.

Josh Imatorbhebhe had a “medical procedure” on Thursday but is expected to be back after spring break.

The Trojans will practice on Friday at 2:50, as the expected rain in the area this weekend led to moving the practice up a day. Practice is still open to the public.

Among those in attendance: OL Jonah Tauanu’u (Narbonne), LB Andre White (PA), LB/S Asa Turner (Carlsbad) and signee CB Olaijah Griffin (Mission Viejo)

“I told our coaches to evaluate the quarterbacks, to get them better, but this is a time for progress, I don’t want them worrying about missing a throw that could cost them the job.” – Helton

Callaway & other staff gave OL Jonah the special attention you see for elite players. It appeared to me Sears won today.

I would agree with that on Jack. Toa was showing Jonah around the practice.

So Tauanu’u was at practice? Good to hear, one of our most important target this class.

Conner and Wole were supposed to be star players, so much so that they didn't get redshirted as freshmen. But they have been disappointments so far. If they are still not ready to contribute, with Conner learning a new position, maybe they should be redshirted this season.

Good point, especially considering he needs to thicken up.

What would be the point of that now? If they haven't figured out the level of play needed at the college level then my guess is it's not going to happen as upperclassmen with a redshirt year.

Alas, look what an extra year did for Nwosu. These are young men and a extra year of development can be huge for some players. Not everyone develops instantly and becomes a three n out guy.
