Talanoa Hufanga and Drake Jackson returned to practice. Hufanga wore a yellow non-contact jersey. Stephen Carr did some rehab work but Clay Helton said he still isn’t back yet. It sounds like he anticipates Carr and Malepeai possibly back for Cal. He said Kenan Christon will hit the four-game mark this weekend and then they’ll make a decision about him taking part in games beyond that depending on if the injured backs are able to return. Velus Jones was not at practice, as he was back home due to a death in his family. Juliano Falaniko practiced today. Special teams coach John Baxter defended the decision to kick the ball deep on Oregon’s 100-yard kickoff return. Baxter said they don’t squib the ball well and that is actually a difficult kick if you don’t do it a lot. He called the return a perfect storm, as player a player got bumped off his mark and into two other players, then another got caught up with a blocker and the coverage over the top wasn’t there, which creates a touchdown return. He also defended the number of kickoffs the Trojans have returned this season. He was clear in his preference to take a chance at a big return. He said he likes to see his players running with the ball and he feels players like to be coached that way.
