This was the look that BYU defense gave USC all day and Clay Helton never adjusted. It's his job as head coach to recognize what the opponents are doing and adjust accordingly, but he can't see what a casual fan sees.

Could've also thrown towards the outside all day too because BYU was playing their DBs so far back.

One of the rare astute comments I heard from the color analyst during the game was that the USC WR's didn't know how to block downfield and seemed out of position or give up on plays. Boy, how far we have dropped from the days of Robert Woods!

I understand that how many defenders in the box will determine run/pass but if you're going to do that, you need the right personnel. We have a big back in Stepp that was CLEARLY moving the pile on most of his touches (except for one stretch play, which was a dumb call). Vavae is more of a slash runner to me, hitting gaps...he's not a pile mover (in particular, he was brought down in the first play of overtime at the line of scrimmage by a defender who was on the ground and hurt!). Carr shouldn't have been in the game at all because he goes down way too easily and he looked slow. Is he injured? And, how can we run RPO when we have a QB who is resistant to running?

But the most significant thing to happen was Harrell leaving the stadium without talking to the press. Something is very wrong. Many speculate that Helton was overruling Harrell's calls because USC's offense looked like that sorry Gumbo crap that Helton has been running the last few years.

Helton is terrible head coach. He wasn't even a good coordinator. Time for him to go. #HeltonOut!

good post, would have liked to see Car on a quick pitch, I think a long pass also would have been effective. Also a pulling Y back would have been good to seal. They have a week to figure it out. BYU had us well scouted and had the perfect defense

What are you doing this Friday evening, and what size headset do you wear?

All of Slovis picks were over the middle into thick BYU coverage players. right into the graphics shown above, I agree the outside was open all day long, and that is where Helton had too overruled GH. Helton is a Micromanaging control freak, and he does not like it when our guys play loose a free and win big like last week.

Going back to what Norm Chow said years ago, when you score 45 you win percentage is above 95% when you get closer to 50 its 97%+. Helton likes USC to win in games in to 28-35 range i guess, based on the fact we were putting it to the Furd in the 4th Qtr scoring TD's and he was yelling in to his headset. Maybee KK took the AZ job because Helton told him he could overrule him and KK wanted pure offense Control.

Sadly, this coaching staff has been outcoached since the beginning of Helton's tenure. The main reason why USC take a dump in the 2nd half of games. Other teams make adjustments and USC can't seem to figure out how to adjust. POOR COACHING!

Is this why Harrell refused post game interviews??? To pissed off about getting overridden by Helton? We hope that is the case

    Excellent post. Thank you.

Doesn't it make you angry and want to pull your hair out when you see how damn SIMPLE it would have been to counter their defensive scheme?

Just look at TWO PICTURES AT HALFTIME and get the ball to the areas that give you the most chance to succeed.

What’s scary is — if this is Harrel calling the plays w/out Helton’s Interference, we’re screwed. If Harrel didn’t want to talk to the media to own up that THIS IS the offense that he devised with Helton, we’re done.

Slow down y'all. Didn't you hear Clay after the game? 'This is ONE game, early in the season." So why is everyone so worried? Oh, and "This team is built for adversity....they dig their way out of this." Jesus, Mary, and Joseph....what a mentality to strap on your team.

Translated from coach speak= I'm putting this all on you team, because I don't know how to take responsibility myself for micro managing.

Love that analysis, tenku. You should do more of these photos in future games as it provides a clear visual on what we actually ran vs. what we should have run.

As much as I couldn’t stand when Kiffy employed the bubble screen (because he over-relied on it), the alignment of BYU’s defense yesterday screamed out for bubble screens. If defenders are playing that far out in zone, beat them silly with short stuff. Force the DBs to move up and THEN air it out.

Sorry, I’m probably stating the obvious to anyone not actually coaching our players.

It just boggles my mind how how his coaching style is so 1 dimensional. Sometimes, opposing coaches will throw something at you that you’ve never practiced against which is fine. But Helton’s gotta be smart and recognize that. He needs to be able to trust his players and tell them, “their entire defense is predicated on stopping anything over the middle, so let’s overload the outside. All the receivers line up on the right. Running back, run outside of the left hashmark and 5 yards beyond line of scrimmage; be ready to catch the ball and go. Kedon, don’t float the ball. Get it out to him quick.”

There were so many simple things Helton could’ve done. These guys have been football players most of their lives; it’s not like they can’t improvise.

Kiffin and Sark were actually good OCs. But not as good HCs.
Saban has hired Sark for that is his talent.
Helton is not a good OC and a bad HC. He is way over his head.
Problem is nobody sees this who has the power to do something about it.
So you see the same thing over and over. No adjustments.

Yesterday’s game is a prelude of what is to become of the USC football team this season. The Stanford game gave us a false hope. Yesterday the Stanford team was dominated by UCF showing that Stanford this season is not the same Stanford as previous years. SC was dominated by a BYU team! As a fan who has been watching this team for 50 years, this revelation is very disheartening. After the Trojans return from Notre Dame, they would probably have a record of 2-4. They will be underdog in the next three games. According to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports Coach Helton’s record as an underdog is 1-12. For 2020 season, USC is ranked 51 by Rivals.com in football recruiting. The team will face Alabama in the opening game next season. These are all scary news for the USC fans, students, alumni, and faculty.

In yesterday’s game, the team played similar to last year: poor defensive calls and execution, poor or non-existent half-time adjustments, poor offensive play calling, and poor coaching. In the overtime, you trail by a field goal, you are at about 20-yard line and a third down, and instead of running the ball, you pass? If the run does not result in any tangible yard, you could make a field goal and send the game to second overtime. For those people who know more about football than I is this the sign of good coaching? Once a proud, dominant football program USC football looks like a below-average one thanks to our two recent ADs. I hope the AD search team set up by the University president brings someone to the position who has extensive managerial and leadership skills, especially in the collegiate athletics. As to watching the games, we are actually watching commercials rather than football and witnessing the referees making numerous questionable calls, such as the one on Pittman. Can the Interim AD ask the referees or their supervisors what were their logic or rationale for making those calls?
