The new DC will be the next Head Coach BarNone Junior Member Joined: Aug 24, 2017 Messages: 482 Likes Received: 685 Dec 29, 2019 #1 probably wishful thinking since one would think no top level candidate would take a job under Dead Man Walking Helton - UNLESS the candidate sees this as the quickest way to take his job mid-season next year. In this scenario, Del Rio makes sense. I have had reservations about Captain Jack as being the answer due to his offenses over the years, but at this stage i am desperate for the toughness he would bring Day One. If we want to bring back the USC toughness, there would be no quicker way to do it than Del Rio. I'm sure this is purely my fantasy and instead Clay will find some mediocre candidate to replace Clancy. But if we see someone of the stature of Del Rio, then this would be their reason. I can't picture Jack having any respect for Clay. Esthersar and TroyWill like this.

Bohn might have given Helton an ultimatum resulting in three defensive coaches leaving yesterday. Bohn may be telling Helton who to hire as a condition for keeping his job. Bohn said Helton will be the coach in 2020. If Bohn fires Helton Wednesday, his statement would be true. redeye and crank31 like this.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure there is no "behind the scenes" based on what we are seeing (current coach continuing on with full AD and University President support in spite of very visible program decay). HCCH's job is not in jeopardy until game attendance falls into the 35,000 or below level, and merch sales tank. Even then, we have no indications the school will be willing to pay for a competitive HC and staff. A well-regarded name was offered a $60M deal by FSU and a good deal more by Arkansas (he's staying put) - even those schools wouldn't blink an eye at a $12M buy-out. And then consider the kind of reclamation project this program will be by the end of 2020, heading into 2021. Talent draining fast. Two years of soft Air Raid philosophy, 5 years of soft practices/lack of tackling/poor discipline. Even a great coach would need at least 2 years to get the ship pointed in the right direction before any results would be visible. Not may willing to sign up for that.

Between the early signing day disaster and the blowout in the Bowl game, his leash is shorter than ever. I think the rumor is correct that Bohn is picking the candidates.
