Pete Thamel: "Sources: USC is finalizing the hire of LSU’s Jeff Martin, who served as Lead Personnel Analyst/Player Development. This marks another big hire as USC continues to build out its off-field football staff."

There are quite a few really strong recruiters out there, but getting Bryan Carrington from Texas and Jeff Martin from LSU in the same offseason is getting two of the best. Really strong move from USC adding to its personnel.

What's the saying? A camel is a horse designed by a committee.

Maybe Bohn and Sosna will use them to help us not only recruit players, but a new coach once Helton leaves!
    Fight On!

Here's Martin talking about his background a bit. Video is from September, 2019.

All these hires to support staff makes me wonder if Bohn realized right way upon his tenure how under-resourced USC's football program was compared to other schools? Perhaps before the usual knee jerk "Fire the Coach" he saw more pressing issues of infrastructure? I don't know but lots of changes no one saw coming...

I am grateful we are adding all these pieces to our staff but recruiting and players haven't been our problem. It has been development, and that problem is coaching. Starting at the top. Helton has to go. Period. Great recruits have not reached their full potential and development under Helton. We can recruit all the best players but if we don't have a HC who knows how to develope them, use them, and game manage then it's all for not.

Main issue is OL , need 4-5 * players to build on. Clay wasn’t done well with big men

Regardless of whoever the head coach is in a few years, they're going to appreciate that Bohn is laying a stronger foundation for improving recruiting in all phases including media/branding.

It's not just about recruiting talented players, it's also about identifying high character individuals who buy in, understand the work they need to do to be great and likely would have developed into a pro caliber player regardless of who the head coach was. There are countless players who get drafted high who didn't have an elite head coach, just got to find them. Every program whiffs on poor character players, but USC's had some epic whiffs over the past 5 or so years.

You are so right. College football has become a mega-business and SC was walking in mud. Have to say thank you Mr. Bohn for bringing us into the 21st century. Now go get us a coach!

Have to say the development comes from the assistant coaches not the head coach. Granted as head coach Helton hasn't done a great job hiring assistant coaches, but Coach Bohn seems to know how to find them so we'll see. I would differ with statement recruiting hasn't been a problem - aside from a year or two with Sark and a year or two with Kiffin, when was the last time we had a top 5 class? We're all happy this year, but we still can't hold a candle to tOSU, Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, etc. These hires may get us into that territory if we play well on the field.

Can we get confirmation that he won't have his name drug through the mud at LSU when things go sideways there.

Especially since he left they may try to put things on him.

Can’t NOT stress this opinion enough. Nobody should really complain much about what Bohn has done since he got here. Swann and Haden were incredibly incompetent as AD’s.

Other than firing Helton himself which I believe he hasn't been allowed to, he's done a good job in many other area's. Hopefully he'll get permission to fire Helton soon.

That's what you get when you're hellbent on hiring former players rather than real AD's.

Mike Garrett was up and down.
He was the best of the three. But I still blame him for destroying our baseball program. It blows my mind how inept we are at the sport now.

Hopefully Bohn can get that going as well.

Agreed Helton isn't developing the individual players but he has hired some bad or inexperienced coaches and coordinators. He also restricts the coaches with his no contact practices. Then his favoritism of senior players, lack of use of players like TE's and this year RB's, his poor game management resulting putting the players in bad position and decision making, and on and on.

I just read an article (can't find the link, sorry) that claimed 77% of all football concussions occur at practice, not games. It didn't mention a comparative percentage regarding other injuries, since the piece was more about CTE and player safety.
