"I think, with USC's football team, some of the mistakes that we've seen this year — there's just some inconsistencies, like the penalties that we've seen, that happen to our football team," Mays said. "We're not talking about talent. We just talked about how our team comes out, plays really well, is on fire and then kind of drops off and gets really cold. A football coach that was able to come in here and get our guys to have attention to detail, focus on the little things, like we were talking about, tackling, putting your head in the right position.

ONE OF THE WEAKNESSES ABOUT HELTON'S TEAMS IS A LACK OF TEAM LEADERS

That's why when there's adversity, the team seems to fall apart and lose games they're winning. Successful teams usually have on-field leaders who lift up the other players thru kind words or threats. Players are held accountable and prevents some of the lack of discipline or attention to details we've seen. IMHO, it's up to the coach to recognize this and do his beat to develop it.

Hard to recognize a leader when you don't have a clue how to lead yourself...

    This very much

How can you expect the team to hone in on who's the real leader/s when the coaching staff doesn't know either. Those players haven't been educated enough to rely on that mindset.

With all due respect to ma man Taylor, he made a lot of bone head, head scratching plays while here.
He did them in his last year here as well.

it's part of discipline. he failed many times in that dept.

Taylor Mays was unlucky. He came up through high school football when the rules still favored hard-hitting safeties flying around like heat-seeking missiles, then midway through college, they started calling the college game differently and those enforcer-type safeties became liabilities.

Can't think of one ex- player who has chimed in the current state of SC football that even remotely supports Helton.

Not only this...but notice how over the last few years under Helton, past players, (Hall of Fame) players have disappeared from the side lines and team practices. It’s obvious they are not happy with the way the program is being run. Bohn has in his recent interviews reached out to those players to support the program, we’ll see how that works.

Also, I don’t think he had great football instincts.
