The USC coaches have been coordinated with their tweets today when it comes to pushing this message. They’ve nearly all posted edits stating “Take back the West.”

USC recently hired Alex Verdugo to be its Manager of Graphic Design, so we’ll likely see more social media graphics moving forward. Verdugo was most recently at Oregon.

Remember this foolish slogan UCLA put up all over town? How did that work out for them?

    Damn... love it.

The use of #55 is quite a home run....

Can Flowe come back with the free agency looming? LMAO

I appreciate the artistic effort, don't much care for the graphic. Slogans.....are lame. They are almost never actionable and they implore the wrong people to get the job done. There's an assumption that quality and productivity problems are primarily due to lack of motivation.

Where USC now is potentially at the beginning of a new "era" with coaches and a decidedly different team. Mistakes will be ample and neither the coaches nor the players need this type of publicity. Much better and smarter to celebrate success than post exhortations before you've done anything remotely good. Win and then post this kind of stuff.

Worked about as well as Kiffin's "Prep, not hype" nonsense.

    *It starts with recruiting
*It starts in practice monday through thursday
    *It starts with the coach
*It starts with S&C in the spring

These all become circular. We all know things need to change and there are many reasons to be pessimistic but it seems like there are a lot of changes happening (except for head coach). SC just went and took one of the best recruiters and one of their marketing folks. Now lets hope there is something to market.

Verdugo was employed by Whoregon but he's an SC grad, Class of 2017. Despite that fact, it looks like we are chasing Whoregon.

I guess this board would have much preferred this to come out?

Sure sounds like it from reading these responses.

I might be splitting hairs and I get what you are saying but the fact is that we don't have much to market right now but we need tohave a presence. We just got smoked by Oregon on the field and recruiting....we need to take back the west.

I don't think this is as cringy as FUCLA "monopoly" or "wake up the echos". I definitely wouldn't want marketing to bring up the amazing history of SC (like ND) since that would look really desperate.

    Just my opinion

I think it’s why “Always compete” and “Win forever” worked well. First of all, you had two slogans over almost a decade. I think we’re on about our fourth in six months at this point. They were actionable, but mostly they worked because pretty much anything sounds cool when you’re winning. I can’t see Carroll really selling Win Forever after going 6-6, or Saban getting people to buy into “The Process” after a couple five-win seasons.

I don’t love any slogan that mentions or hints at other programs, which “Take back the West” definitely does. It’s why UCLA’s “Monopoly” line was terrible.

I remember back when the Raiders were in LA, and they had a string of poor seasons, their slogan of "Committment to Excellence" rang very hollow.

I believe the late great Jim Murray quipped, "Their slogan should be changed to 'Commitment to Competence!'"

Maybe that should be the slogan with Helton's teams. Instead of "Take Back the West" with the picture of a #55 player, there should be a series of posters with Helton with his open-mouthed stare with various poses and situations.

"Take that math test!" with Helton exhorting his players to maintain academic eligibility.

"Wear your life vest!" with Helton preaching the value of water safety

"Just do your best!" with Helton struggling mightily to bench press 135.

"Please be my guest!" with a picture of Helton in a recruit's living room, standing bashfully in the corner while a quartet of Oregon coaches enthusiastically sign the 5-star kid.

"Surely you jest!" with a picture of a snoozing Helton, a thought bubble over this head showing a final score of USC: 42 Alabama: 14.
