Every Coach in the SEC is paid more. Five Coachs in the PXII earn more a year. I am sure that all the assistants are paid on a par with the head Coach so the pay disparity permeates the whole system. Plus we have cost of living and exorbinate taxes in the LA area and so you can see the trend. Helton is the new normal for USC.

Maybe SC could pay more if they didn't have to keep paying the previous coaches that were fired mid-year. Thank God we didn't extend Helton's contract and give him an exorbitant buyout too, given the history. I mean, that would just be foolish. Oh, wait.

I’m not going to fall into the fatalist view that Helton is the new normal at USC. If USC wants an elite HC, they can pay him. Whether or not they are willing to is yet to be seen.

I think the OP who made the thread title is expressing his displeasure (or “complaining”) that he doesn’t see things changing at USC.

That's relevant. Every school in the SEC brings in more money due to twice the TV contract earnings than the Pac 12. So they have more money to play with in hiring HC's and Assistant Coaches.

Our expectations are titles and USC tells everyone that their goals are titles. Is this a lie? If it isn't then get rid of our bargain basement below average head coach. Spend the money and get back to winning.

This is it right here. Put your money where your mouth is and hire a top HC, and reap the financial benefits that come with winning.

Kansas State is 4-2 in Klieman's first year (Big 12) and he's looking like the next Tom Herman. (They just beat TCU)

Klieman signed a six-year contract worth $16.8 million with Kansas State (2.8 million a year)

    Overall
76–15 ( All Head coaching experience) Winning percentage 83.52%
Tournaments 18–1 (NCAA FCS playoffs) Winning percentage 94.74%

    Clay Helton
Wikipedia lists him at $3.8 million a year.

    Overall 36–20 Winning percentage 64.29%
    Bowls 2–2 Winning percentage 50%

I think it's more about finding the right guy. Tons of teams have spent like Tennessee Jeremy Pruitt (3.8 million) and are not winning.

Saban, Meyer or Dabo are worth every penny but If you're not going to loosen the purse strings. Then you need to go after a proven young winner.

**I could list 10 guys that would improve this team that are in the Clay Helton price range.

THIS. I don't know what it is going to take to make people realize the university does NOT want to pay top dollar for a football coach. If they can win with a coach in the middle of the salary range for D-I coaches, all is well. And if they can't, so what, their costs are still covered. The OP is exactly right.

Losing to Alabama, Ohio State, ND, BYU, UCLA and miss a bowl game is normal to SC? I don’t think so!

If anything Helton is overpaid. A coach with no prior head coaching experience with a subpar assistant coach resume being paid $3.8 million? I’d imagine no other place would poach him for more than that amount.

I am just pointing out that coachs with his w/l record and his achievements are making more than him. The Washington st coach makes one and a half times what Clay makes as does the coach at Kentucky and UCLA. We are getting more than our moneys worth with Clay

Clay makes 3.2 million. Stanfords Shaw makes $4.5 and they get less than USC get from Helton

Apples and Oranges. FCS record is a good indicator but not a valid comparison. Klienman is 4-2, roughly Heltons w/l percentages and they still have to play Texas and Oklahoma. they will be lucky to end up 7-5

I've seen several different sources that have give a different number(Private Schools). This list has Brian Kelly ND low. Ive seen 4 million a year.

    https://www.si.com/college-football/2018/02/06/clay-helton-usc-football-coach-contract-extension

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clay_Helton

Here is a list that puts things in perspective:

    https://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/

Clay Helton is not exactly being paid peanuts. He's 43 in the Nation out of 130 FCS schools
These are the coaches at or below his salary. Just look at the talent.

    Pat Narduzzi PITT
    Les Miles Kansas
    David Cutcliffe Duke
    Mario Cristobal Oregon
    Herm Edwards ASU
    Ken Niumatalolo Navy
    Chris Klieman Kansas State
    Josh Heupel Central Florida
    Dino Babers Syracuse
    Bryan Harsin Boise State
    Gary Andersen Utah State
    Rocky Long SDSU
    Sonny Dykes SMU
