Love GH. Hope so much he succeeds.

Has our fan base -- or the program -- ever been so dependent on the success of one assistant coach?

I’d say Norm Chow was very close.

He seems like a three year guy.

I agree, he was the first that came to mind. But we had outstanding defenses and the team was pretty solid across the board when Chow was here. I’m not sure yet how the rest of the team will play out this season and we really need GH’s offense to click.

For Harrell to be at SC for 3 yrs means that Helton has turned things around and the team is improving dramatically. If that were to happen, Harrell would find himself in a very strong position and considering many coaching offers. So, I find the scenario you are suggesting unlikely. He'll be here 2 yrs and gone or one year and gone after Helton gets fired. Not to say that he wouldn't be offered the USC coaching job.

The reason why I am optimistic that this will work...

“USC’s performance in a 24–17 loss to third-ranked Notre Dame inspired Helton to make this offseason change. He installed a simple, pass-centric game plan against the third-ranked Irish that resulted in his offense’s best performance of the season. Had the Trojans not lost two first-half fumbles, they might very well have won. Daniels completed 37 of 51 passes for 349 yards operating a scheme similar to the one he’ll run in 2019.”

I’m with you on this. I would say we would be lucky to have him for two. Our well publicized down year, puts a bigger spotlight on him. If he turns around the O, and we have a 9 or 10 win season??? The HC offers start rolling in for him. Guaranteed.

I’m hoping SC hires Leach after they fire Helton. I’d like to see what he can do in a blue blood school.

Sounds like Leach wanted Harrell at the last minute just so USC didn’t get him or was WSU in the market for an OC

That part caught my eye too, but in reading further I found it was referring to Clay McGuire (WSU OL Coach) contacting Harrell, not Clay Helton. Leach wanted Harrell to come work for him at WSU rather than take the high school OC job several years ago.

If SC has the big comeback that I pray will happen what can we offer Graham to keep him ? National spotlight becomes blazing if Team is successful. College even pros will be offering. At Ram camp talk was everyone wants another McVay , young & bright coach that turned team into a Super Bowl team. So what can Folt offer him ?

They can make him the highest paid OC in the country. I think that would keep him for a few years anyway unless an NFL HC offer happens. But unless Kingsbury is unexpectedly successful in his first year with the Cards, I think it will be a few years before such an offer rolls in for Harrell. But you never know.

If the NFL were to come looking to hire him as an HC, there’s not a whole lot we could do to keep him if that’s his goal. I have to think he’d take it, and I certainly wouldn’t blame him for it (nor do I blame Kingsbury).

If Harrell is successful here and then leaves for the NFL, I would hope that there are other college OC’s with similar systems that USC would be looking at as a replacement.

We're talking about finding an OC that is better than last year's mess. It's not like putting a man on the moon. If GH is great we should be undefeated. If he is good, then we might make a good bowl, and he sticks around as a good OC. Remember, USC did win the Rose bowl with goober and tee as the co-OC's not so long ago. If GH has a pulse then it's just up to the P-D.
