If you believe in your offense you should take the ball. For USC tonight I'd definitely kick.

I've also always preferred kicking and getting the ball to start the 2nd half (like an insurance policy if you are behind at the half) Pete always deferred.

Getting the ball to start the 2nd half can also shift momentum especially if the opponent goes into the locker room with momentum in their favor.

Except we have scored on every opening position, I think that's right

    Touchdown, field goal, touchdown.

First possession of the second half for opponents this year are: fumble, missed field goal, punt.

First possession of the second half for USC: fumble, punt, punt.

Win the coin toss and you get..
Choice of end zone to defend should noise or weather come into play.
Possible back to back offensive possessions with 1st/2nd half.

All things Helton wouldn't even consider. Right now he is committed to his Air Raid Offense and he wouldn't even think about going against 90 mile an hr winds in the 4th qtr. He doesn't think smart like most people.

One thing I like about deferring is it gives your defense a little extra rest time during and after halftime. Stanford kept SC's defense on the field an extraordinarily long time to start the 2nd half.

I loved Pete's teams that always picked tails, always deferred to the 2nd half.
That way, your first stop has the net effect of being a turnover.
