Does Helton get to keep his job again? After all, that would be a 3 game improvement over the 2018 campaign. It doesn't seem Swann gives any effs about the program or fans as long as he can make up bs lies to himself saying that things are going in the right direction. I would assume this doesn't meet the expectation of most fans either.

Honestly, if he keeps his job after a season like that, USC football has some dark days ahead......Imagine if he won 10 games in 2019 by beating up on crap PAC 12 teams. and then had another 5 win season in 2020 with Swann trying to point out how Helton had 10 wins in 2019 as justification for keeping him for a 2021 season...

Don't think it can be anything but bad unless USC all of a sudden switches conferences or goes independent.

He lost 7 games in a year where the schedule was favorable and he had the talent to win ~10.
Gomer’s hiring has nothing to do with wins or losses. Get used to it.

Not for me, but.... 8-5 would be viewed as a big improvement by this administration who clearly no longer values football as a priority - and 8-5 gets Helton back another year ! :-( Maybe 8-5 with losses - again ! - to fucla and neuter dame gets some attention but I doubt it....

I imagine 8-5 next year will earn him a contract extension with a nice raise.

Sadly, now that the bar is so low, I think he would keep his job. He had zero excuses to have a losing season, and somehow still accomplished it this year.

He's our Kirk Ferentz. Expect a really good year once in a while; with a lot of mediocre but really nice guy finishes.

    This.

As a football fan, I've always said that I would prefer to root for a 6-6 team that fights hard, plays good, solid hardnosed football, looks well-prepared for games, and gives fits to teams that, on paper, should walk all over them compared to rooting for a 9-3 team that has the horses to go undefeated, but plays undisciplined, passionless, listless football rife with dumb mistakes and penalties, and generally underachieves, and loses to teams they shouldn't and struggles against teams they should blow out.

So, if the 2019 USC squad goes 8-5, and looks like they're perhaps missing some talented pieces on offense and defense that could put them over the top, but otherwise plays decent football, I will consider that a positive.

If, OTOH, we see more of the same crap we saw this year with stupid penalties, players with obvious deficiencies not being benched or moved, and idiotic adherence to low-percentage deep passes, 8-5 will seem very hollow when the 8 is all shitty teams and the 5 are the rivalry games, Oregon, Washington and Stanford.

Without a doubt, CCH would keep his job at 8-5 next year. He and Swann would point to new coaching staff and systems, inexperienced secondary, blah blah blah blah.

Don't agree. Just the reality of situation.

Good point, as long as two of those 8 victories are against UCLA and ND, I might not be calling for his head......they played hard on Saturday, could have won, and fought until the bitter end. The result was a downer, but, at least I didnt feel like I did when I was at the Coliseum watching them play ASU and Cal......Those games were incredibly frustrating and hard to watch. If they play like THAT and somehow get to 8-5, not good.

Honestly, if Swann truly has heard the fan base as he alludes to, he KNOWS they have to be successful next season. Helton isnt getting another two or three years - he has to get us there next year - otherwise this would be the second bad year for SC in a row -

It’s basically better to root against him then for him. When UW and ucla fans are rooting for him, you know you got a problem.

That's exactly why I'm done being a serious USC fan until there are major changes. At this point I enjoy rooting for a team like Washington St much more.

He shouldn't keep his job with that record but the reality is Swann and Helton will spin it as heading in the right direction. I don't see 8 wins on the schedule next year at the level this team is playing.

PC had a stretch where he lost just 13 games total in 8 seasons. That era seems a distant memory because it is. How far we have fallen.

    Agree.

I'll add, the way I'd measure this improvement would be a minimum top 20 ranked team in penalties/game. Anything less would be a major disappointment. This might be the single easiest thing to fix without having to fire anyone off the staff. How hard is it to discipline someone for chirping, unsportsmanlike/personal fouls, and dancing after every play?

Why, though? They had a great year for them and still didn't win anything. And most years aren't that great.

I don't demand championship contention every year to support a team. But I sure as heck want it to be within the realm of possibility.
