Sam's weak arm uscmike5524 Junior Member Joined: Aug 24, 2017 Messages: 383 Likes Received: 187 Aug 4, 2019 #1 Seems like so long ago that Sam's arm strength was actually questioned by a poster on this board. https://twitter.com/DanSerafin/status/1155203601767239682?s=19

Sam would have been a college football hall of fame QB if he played during the PC years. His natural ability with very little college program development was phenomenal. People really didn't realize how good he was until he was gone. The difference between 2018 and 2017 was 85% Sam. Despite our defensive, OL, and coaching woes. He simply made throws that would leave you thinking ".........How???". Even with people pressuring him constantly. I'll say it. He's the most talented QB to ever leave USC. Despite not being statistically the best. pgoodman, KnightsWhoSayNi, TheTrojanKnight and 6 others like this.

I believe Sam has that “it” factor and will win a Super Bowl or two. Palmer certainly was talented but didn’t have the “it” factor. Rodgarnay51 likes this.

My favorite though was when one of his threads he started following the opening game vs. Western Michigan was one of three examples cited by USA Today as being completely irrational threads started by fans. uscmike5524, DJ4SC and CrownoftheValley like this.

He had all the superlatives, the "measurables" you look for. Size, strength, arm strength, speed, athleticism, etc. A John Elway-esque archetype. Darnold, while not quite as athletically gifted as Palmer, (even though he's darn close - just not as physically imposing as Palmer) was, IMO the best overall talent at QB that USC has ever had. Consider what Darnold was able to accomplish with a terrible coaching staff and relatively weaker roster. Palmer only became the Palmer we love and remember in 2002 when he was finally coached up to his potential. Prior to that under Hackett, he looked awfully mediocre. pgoodman likes this.

I think he will if they provide him the tools but then we saw what they did for Sanchez. Now Mayfield showed more signs of “It” last season than Sam

Sanchez was an okay QB on an insanely talented team. A guy I believe had that "it" factor, but wont ever enter the conversation when the topic is "best USC QBs of all time" was Cody Kessler. He didn't seem to have any superlatives you could point to, but he was a gamer and leader and a steady presence in the pocket. KANDI11 likes this.

When USC was behind near the end of a game, there was little or no chance at winning that game with him at QB, hardly the it factor that is needed to take a team to a higher level. Initially he had trouble with deep ball accuracy but that improved. If you don't have the OL to protect you then you can't relay step up and chuck it. In fact I would argue Darnold has a very strong arm. How many times did that guy air it out off his back foot or on the run? Sam Darnold makes plays like Air Supply "Out of Nothing at all".
