Not to be a Debbie Downer, but this hire excites me as much as watching paint dry. Wake me up when Clay Helton is relieved of his coaching duties and a new coach with new blood and energy is brought in to try and fix this mess.

I looked over the job requirements. I don't remember seeing "must excite AZTrojan38, lol. I keed mostly but if not him, then whom else do you suggest as a legit option? At this point, we need to get someone in place. Doesn't have to be a homerun as long as it's not a total loser. He fits.

A question for the smart guys--- If Harrell is running the up tempo, 40 plus pass a game offense
doesn't that mean lots of plays probably quick scores or turnovers do we have enough defensive
line and backers to do the necessary rotations so that they aren't exhausted and subject to more injuries
late in games and late in the season. The Dline has some studs for sure but what about when they sub?
I Just wondering because I don't know the players well enough to have a solid opinion. Perhaps one of the experts could help.

Orlando as DC. Nansen to ST. Claiborne can still come in a number of ways: GA Linebackers, inside LB coach, outside LB coach or just straight up LB coach.

The posse of Texas alums and fans was closing in on HC Tom Herman for going 8-5 after a strong 10-4 campaign that had UT folks smelling CFP in 2019 - Orlando and the OC were the guys who took the fall in this case.

All for the hire given (1) late date in recruiting cycle and (2) need for a guy who knows something about Power 5 environment. If Orlando is hired hoping he might be able to hit if off with Chris Claiborne who might be able to develop into a Ken Norton Jr type of guy for the Trojans. Also hope that maybe a couple of UT guys might want to follow TO to the Trojans which could bolster the team defensive depth.

I was hoping for Rocky Long or Kris Richard. But I guess Orlando is OK. Certainly better than promoting Nansen.

Orlando has had success in the past, but so did Pendergast before Helton. Can he be effective with his players not practicing tackling?

Don't claim to be a "smart guy," but Air Raid offenses and other tempo schemes tend to put additional pressure on the defense and if those defenses lack depth, expose them. Look at the defenses and points allowed by such teams at Wazzu and Texas Tech. That said, I like our defensive depth next year. I hope that Orlando emphasizes takeaways rather than the lay back, keep everything in front of you mantra that was CP.

Orlando would want to come in being able to pick his coaches
But this is best can do until USC can find a HC who provides the culture and environment for a successful program
Why was Helton given such a long contract without showing he could do the job?

That's easy. Because Swann was an inexperienced idiot. He apparently believed that after the Rose Bowl Helton was a hot commodity, that someone else would snap him up unless SC tied him up first. Most of us had serious doubts that the success was due to Helton rather than the presence of guys like Darnold, Jackson, Smith-Shuster, etc. There was no interest in Helton from no one, no where. Where is he going to go after SC? Alabama? Come on Nick Saban, I double damn dare you to hire Gomer when that time comes!

I too am all in on bringing Claiborne on board in some capacity. Our guys can benefit from his spirit and energy.

Too bad USC doesn’t open with Texas next year.

Color me unimpressed and frankly just sad and pissed.

This took as long as it has for this? GH can just kiss my ass out the door too. I understand Helton is gone and he needed to take that interview but his shelf life in the NFL has a closer expiration date. No loyalty and frankly all this talk about how great our offense is...against a shitty conference.

So a recap, screw Helton, these Texas guys and our AD/President. I am so glad I killed our membership.

Isn't that partly a function of Big 12 style of football? Most of them are towards the bottom of the list; even Oklahoma was only 58th in pass defense:

    TTU 128th
    Texas 127th
    Okie St. 102nd
    Kansas 98th
    WVA 88th
    Oklahoma 58th
    Iowa St. 72nd
    Baylor 49th
    K.State 33rd
    TCU 27th

You better channel your inner Rip Van Winkle. You have a long sleep ahead of you.

This is the sort of hire that was expected, so I am neither satisfied nor depressed.

We all knew a home run hire was not going to happen
