Looking at Orlando’s resume at USC Scoop he has 24 years of good experience as a DC. It seems like a good hire
It seems that the coaches are good and what is missing is a good culture

Was he the DC at Texas who made adjustments & shut SC down in Austin? Recall sitting there cheering our two scores then groaning when Clay couldn’t answer their adjustments.

Orlando was the sacrificial lamb for Herman in order to keep his job. Orlando has been successful at other schools so hopefully a new location and team will bring desired results. I'm pretty sure Helton has been directed to stay away from the defense.

Perhaps he and GH can be instrumental in plucking one or two plums from Texas, but that would be contingent upon signs of a turn around with SC and some confidence that the program is righted. Until, then we will have got to go with what we have. Next season is critical. The key to our recruiting is reasserting dominance in our own backyard and elsewhere in the state. As long as Helton remains the face of the program, and unless we go, say 10-2 , win the South along with at least two of the "big games" (Bama, ND, Oregon, UCLA) our recruiting profile in Texas and other places will lag. Any hope for a turnaround in the short term will depend upon Harrell and Orlando.

Richard was literally just fired for poor performance though...

You prefer USC hire Clairborne - who has never coached a game at the collegiate level?

I am going to take a "Glass is Half Full" shot at this.

Given the current state, Harrell and Orlando are realistically the best coordinators USC can get right now. Harrell's offense can work (though please run it sometimes Graham), and Orlando has experience coaching in a Power 5 conference.

Most of the 2019 roster returns in 2020, and the low-numbers 2019 recruiting class will not hurt yet. But even though the glass is half full, we will still need to hide the women and children during the 2020 opener against Alabama.

Hey, IF this were to happen, I would be a very happy fan. Bottom line is that I want SC to win and be relevant again. I want our opponents to fear playing in the Coliseum again. I want that all. If that happens after all these internal changes, wonderful. But, it is a mighty big IF. I do like myself better when I am a positive sort rather then the other way that I have been, so I’m going to root along with you that your scenario plays out rather than mine

The "bottom line" remark is perfect!

If you're looking for confirmation on this, a reporter at the Lubbock Avalanche Journal reported that Orlando is no longer working for Texas Tech. He was hired by Texas Tech on Jan. 8. Nothing official yet from USC, but this looks all but done.

This would have been exciting two months ago if we could have traded Graham Harrell to Texas for Orlando and the rights to Bijan Robinson's commitment.

If Harrell was considering the Palouse, I guarantee his wife said "yeah, right honey. You go there. Me and the baby will be here in Manhattan beach when you can get away".

Still young, with a chance to grow and get better. NFL DC, and coached "Legion of boom". Something that cannot ever be erased from his resume.

Not mad at the Orlando news, but I would prefer a combo of Richard and Claiborne, too.

HC or DC.....no. For LB coach and to bring some needed credibility with local recruits ....yes.

Let's see....Helton has been told to keep his hands off the offense and to stay away from the defense. That's nice work if you can get it. I can see Bohnner's master plan........... he's trying to get Gomer to quit. LOL

The issue with Claiborne now becomes that if you bring in Todd Orlando, he's a linebacker coach by trade. And Johnny Nansen is still here. You can find a spot for Nansen, as he's shown he's versatile enough to coach other positions. But could you really bring in Claiborne as another linebackers coach? Personally, I would bring Claiborne into the program as anything from the linebackers coach all the way down to the guy who makes post-practice shakes for the players. I think he's someone you need in the program right now in any capacity. We'll see how it plays out though.

Unfortunately, yes this is the best SC can do given the self-sanctions that is Helton as a head coach. That being said, this hire could have been much worse. Helton's rolodex is paper thin and his job security may be even thinner. Scraping the bottom at SC looking for any band-aids they can convince to come to SC.
