Football only brings in a few million dollars a year, research grants brings in hundreds of millions of dollars a year. It's a simple mathematical equation for Folt. Football is not important in the overall growth of the University now.
When they do it right, many colleges have been able to do both at a high level. Universities were run efficiently at the top, and the Prez allowed autonomy to the AD to run their programs.
Stanford in their winning years comes to mind, UW in theirs, ND, Cal under Tedford, Michigan...it can be done. It's not 1 or the other.
