Not sure of the odds of him returning post mission. The pull to BYU has to incredible...

All the best to the young man though.

As someone who left USC to serve an LDS mission and then returned to graduate, I think you are grossly overestimating that pull. Maybe if he's so far down the depth chart that he wouldn't play here. But playing football at USC and playing at BYU are not even comparable.

A player taking a mission while at SC hasn't happened in some time.

I think the last one was OL Faaesea Mailo back in the late 1990's.

Katoa mentioned that taking a mission was a possibility back when he was recruited.

So just another reason SC felt comfortable taking upwards of (6) elite linebacker prospects in this past recruiting class.

Safe travels to Katoa, and looking forward to seeing him compete again in 2020.

Not thin at LB. Glad we aren’t talking about OL.

Good luck to Tayler. Hope he returns but, if not, best wishes to him elsewhere.

In that case, it would have been a trip and not a mission : ).

Two Mormons knocked on my door...When they left my dishes were washed and my floors were mopped. I think I'm a LDS now...

Does anyone know whether the decision was made because of his injury last year and was he able to play this fall? Was he fully recovered, or just saw the writing on the wall with Palaie and Solo? Just wondering?

I had high hopes for him here but sometimes things don’t go as we think. He’s a heck of a player who never got to show it here as of yet.

    Wish him the best.

Tayler Katoa mentioned during recruitment he wanted to play one season, and then go on the mission for two years, and come back.

Unfortunately, he got injured at SC during Spring Ball that prevented him from playing last Fall.

So he was derailed from playing . . . but it didn't derail his mission.

Former OL Damian Mama also had talked about going on a mission after his first year, but after he started several games as a frosh, he delayed the decision.

One thing for sure is that Katoa will be completely healed from the ACL injury when he plays football again.

Thanks Helix, I hope he does come back and play for us, I was just wondering if he was still having problems with his ACL and that made the decision easier for him to go on his mission!

I’ll take your word for it, but I was thinking that being surrounded by likeminded spirituality and Mormon girls/prospective wives would be more influential than football. But just my thought, can’t say I really know.

It is interesting because his dad played at BYU. My nephew played and graduated with Tayler last spring at Layton High and my nephew is currently serving an LDS mission in Peru.

I’m a Mormon myself who served my LDS mission in Southern California. I’ve always carried a high disdain for BYU. In my ignorant opinion I’d say the depth chart would push him to BYU before anything.

At least he’d be a couple years older, which might possibly move him up the depth chart a notch. As a non-Mormon, I’ll take your word on all the rest.

Meh, I went to BYU for law school and the delusion surrounding their football program is off the charts. I couldn't handle it.

And FYI, there is no shortage of eligible LDS girls in southern California.

How do guys usually do in FB after they return from their mission? Does that time off hurt, or does their added maturity help?
