Aha, the inevitable (predictable?) "Racist!" allegation. Surprised it took this long...

Yes several comments on this thread low key racist. Your denial is not a surprise. Since when folk admit to their racism? Some here want the athletes to just shut up and dribble or run up and down the field to your delight. Damn their health, damn covid, etc etc. For decades these schools and the ncaa have totally taken advantage of this free labor force. Hell the money the football program earns the university, you would think a share of the revenue (or regular stipend plus the ability to profit off their likeness), life time medical would be a good start. But for some it appears the desire to want to maintain the status quo of this modern day plantation alive and well.

If its so lucrative why not start their own sports league? Its all about the players, right, so audience is guaranteed.

When a person looks at an issue through a straw with racist bias regarding any issue, their points of view and wordy comments will end up being a narrow minded and biased view of the issue at hand.

"While he stood and stared intently at the wasp that was threateningly hovering in front of him, he did not see that to either side of him was two groups of wasps about to sting his ass into painful reality."

Next will come the organizing of the quiet peaceful sounding C.A.L.M. (College Athletes Lives Matter) movement that will be co-opted by Antifa, O.F.A., the American Communist Party and all other anarchist groups wishing to loot, riot, burn, pillage, murder, beat up innocent citizens, demand protection money from small businesses, enlist cowardly traitorous corporations, and declare themselves a separate country on U.S. soil.

You do realize that the articles you linked to don't actually back up what you're saying, don't you? Football was the only sport to make any money, and they only did so because they made about $13 million off of two games.

And your claim of "low key racist" is laughable. Your logic is that since the majority of CFB players are black any criticism of the players is racist.

Not really how that works. However, it's a good start if you're looking for the thought police.

Screw you. We better teach these CHILDREN that life isn't fair. If you don't want the scholarship give it to others that are deserving and THANKFUL. When does the madness stop. Are there any grown ups left or are they afraid to being called racists and other labels the left uses to stop free speech.

You get it now. We're willing to pony up $70K/year in return for folks that have no business at USC entertaining us. They get professional training, an education (for those that actually want one), room/board, etc--far better than they were getting at home in many cases), and we get to be entertained.

That doesn't sound fair to you? Seems like the players are the ones getting the better deal here.

Nothing in your numbers indicates that USC benefits financially from FB, after paying for the other sports. That isn't general fund money. If FB were gone, the rest of the school would be just fine. FB is for us alums.

There's also an excellent article (believe it or not) in the LA Times by Mark Zeigler that focuses primarily on the 50% revenue sharing. Zeigler points out that when you do the math, a football scholarship at SC (or elsewhere in the Pac-12) is worth A LOT of money, and he provides numbers. The article also underscores how impractical this demand is. It's interesting that the demands are being led by the Ruin unionizing advocate Ramogi Huma, and the article mentions the obvious attempt to leverage the current Covid and racial issues. Definitely also worth reading.

Don't get paid? You don't consider $70K/year being "paid?" How does that compare with what they'd be doing if they weren't on the FB team? And who's holding that gun to their heads, forcing them to make this "sacrifice?"

I'm sure the PAC 12 will be bending over backwards with efforts to protect the players health and safety related to Corona Virus. I don't believe that's what this petition is about--it is just being used as an excuse.

I'm ok if those athletes want to refuse to play. I'm ok if coaches/teams decide to lock those students out for this season.

They will be surprised to see that the game can go on just fine without them. It is probably time for a reset on all this entitlement BS anyway.

If somebody says something racist I suppose it's predictable that someone might say it's racist.

The fact that it's predictable doesn't mean it's wrong.

If you brought in $115,000,000 a year in revenue would you consider $70,000 a year fair?

Yes a college scholarship is more than minimum wage. But the revenue generated in football and basketball has exploded while the "compensation" to the players has not kept pace. Of course 50% of the gross is not realistic. But it's not surprising that the people most responsible for the product watch all this money flying by going into other pockets and want a piece of the action.
