For some this is a tired post. However, I was talking to a buddy about this last night and it was really interesting to hear his thoughts. I know the masses will never be completely pleased (unless we go undefeated and even then they’ll be some whining). But what about Garry’s board? My friend and I want a new staff. We’re fed up with the puppet show and want Swann & Co out. But Helton’s last stand begins in a few weeks.

I said he needs to beat Stanford, ND, and UCLA. I’ll take a loss at Washington and even a clunker along the way (i.e. blowing a lead at home to a Utah or Oregon). But if Helton beats our closest rivals and ends up with 9 wins… I think I’m good. I’ll join the chorus of bruin students chanting, “Keep Clay Helton! Keep Clay Helton!…”

What’s it going to take for Clay to keep his job?

That’s only because there’s been so many of them, and they are usually pretty divisive.

The real answer is that it’s in Swann’s head somewhere, and none of us knows what it will take for him to keep his job.

I want to see the team go at least 9-3 with the team looking good, not merely squeaking by lesser teams, and consistently playing 4 quarters of solid football. I also want to see that Helton was serious about the changes that he made, that he himself has bought into them and that they go beyond being forced to by Swann. I want to see him closely monitoring his coordinators for results, and to hold them accountable if they are not there.

And while I don’t expect to win that game, I’d like to have at least SOME hope that it could happen going into the 2020 game with Alabama.

    So it's come to this?
I really like Erik, Greg, and DR. Okay, I agree Arledge is a clown, but he has had some stellar moments here and there in the past. I say we keep him, but make sure he knows he is on the hot seat.

Every single day that passes is another day too long.

Call 1: Pete- you know you have a standing offer to bounce back in anytime you ever felt like it right? Ok now I want to ask Pete to help and endorse and sell this off as a Lynn Swann and PeteC decision.

    The whole list is
    Urban?

Then it's Mike Leach or Jimmy Lake.

OP, you are putting the cart before the Trojan Horse. Dr Folt will be reviewing the situation with the alto;etic department first. I don't trust Lynn Swann's decision making in hiring another head coach. Hoping a competent AD will be hired this coming year and the athletic program will improves. Clay Helton has made staff changes which should improve the team's performance. Fall camp is almost here. Lets see how much the team improves.

Forget it. My jaw is set. I'm not going anywhere.

That said, in light of my overall performance, I do recognize that the seat is warm and getting warmer. If there were any USC football opinion columnists just hanging out there Urban Meyer-like, I'd definitely be looking over my shoulder.

    15-0, CFP Champs.

Anything less, and he has to go. We all know for a fact that Urban would do it this year if we had him.

Most of the kidding aside, and I know the OP didn't mean for it to sound like Garry's board staff is a puppet show, well SERIOUSLY I just couldn't resist.

If you truly love USC......how can anyone, after watching him game manage the past three years, want to retain him. If we win its in spite of Helton not because of Helton.

If Clay despite the set jaw doesn’t field a vastly improved team qualitatively and quantitatively in 9-3 territory...and if donors then step up to help fund a buyout... we will see Urban Meyer v Saban to start 2020.

Win the PAC-12 South. This would exceed all media pundit expectations for the team and coaching staff.

Maybe 8-4 (splitting the ND and fUCLA rivalry games) but not winning the PAC-12 South.

So well stated. There is no amount of wins this year that could convince Clay is a good head coach. I watched us play the last two years, and there is no doubt he is completely incompetent.
That being said, anything less that 10 regular season wins and a conference championship should send him packing.
