I have been through many underwhelming head coaching announcements starting with Ted Tollner, but this feels by far the worst. I think this is because it’s the 3rd time for Helton. Also because we had the possibility of Urban Meyer (and other much more capable coaches) dangled in front of our face this time around.

This is 2 years in a row that they had to make an announcement of retaining a coach that still has several years on his contract. So despite his contract he is a lame duck coach who may or may not be back in 2021 depending on how the team performs next season. This will not help recruiting of top notch players or assistants.

This announcement would make for a really good German video.

A tweet and an issued statement. Seems neither of them wanted any part of anything resembling a question from a live human being. Both hid under skirts.

Question: What exactly is Helton talking about here?
"...It is abundantly clear that we now have the support, resources and tools to build a championship team."

I'd like him to list those exact elements...the specific support, resources and tools. Just what does he have now that he did not already have? I call that sentence of his bull.
Also, just exactly how many years does he intend to take to build it?

First time in CFB history, a bunch of freshman are going to come in and be stars on the oline? get real.

So what? He should win the vast majority of home games. That means he peaks at 8 wins and flops at 4-5 wins if he loses a home game or two. Yippee!

I think the BOT is behind this.

They don't care about sports and probably would prefer USC was more like Yale level sports.

Lol...the next time I receive a call from USC asking for money, I am going to ask them if they fired Clay Helton after the 2019 season. When they say, "No". I am going to say, "well there you go" and then hang up.

I think this is a job for @KeenObserver . His Sark Hitler video is hilarious. He can probably use the same script, just replacing Sark with Helton.

They are always behind USC in recruiting ranking. They just have a better coaching staff, and have been extremely competitive with USC in recent years. Toss a coin, either team can win when going head to head. It is now one of my favorite games to watch.

I absolutely agree with this. I have a feeling in 2021 there will be a new coach and his initials are U.M., this year was just bad timing.

USC athletic director Mike Bohn tweeted the announcement and a message of support for Helton:
“I am pleased to let you know Coach Helton will continue to be our head coach. His commitment to our student-athletes and to leading with integrity is vital to restoring our championship program, which is the goal for all of our teams".......snip.
As disappointed as many of us are with the prospect of another season of mediocre performance from USC's football program it is encouraging to read in AD Mike Bohn's statement that he is committed to the task of making USC a champion again. That tells us what we need to know about him and gives us hope for the direction of the program in the future. Now , if we could get a similar public statement from USC Pres. Folt I think we could all feel better about the future. Her commitment to excellence at USC (including football) will be a necessary part of the effort.

As always, SC according to Helton will have been two plays away from a win plus the game will provide a wealth of game film information.

The level of hysteria is questionable. The sky will not fall much if any over the next 12 months. There will be ups and downs of course.

Keep Harrell and build on that success. Hire a great defensive coordinator that can recruit the big uglies and you will be on the right track. USC could start the season with a loss to Alabama and still charge on to win the P12 and go to the Rose Bowl.

Bohn probably intends to support Clay Helton with the types of support staff that schools like Alabama use as part of their normal process. USC has been way behind the curve on analyst positions, etc.

Clay is obviously not a real quick learner, but he "is" learning and growing and if we take another tick up next year, he could be quite successful for many years to come...he won't unlearn the things he finally does get through that skull...the one thing he has had in his favor all along is that he can motivate the players. That is something to build on at least.

I can already see this playing out:
    1) Gomer “shits the bed” and our team looks unprepared and loses big in the Bowl Game
    2) Get our ass handed to us by Alabama
    3) Everyone wants Gomer Fired...AGAIN!
    4) team goes 7-5 and we’re still irrelevant
    5) we are back to where we were this year...wishing we had an AD with the “BALLS” to hire a top tier coach who just so happens to be in our backyard

Another waste of a season and the shitty recruiting puts us further back from a Pac 12 & National Championship

    The madness never ends!!!!

I just don't understand why we are settling for mediocre coaches ever since PC left. The only one who was worth a shot was Coach O and Haden screwed that up. Sad day for USC football. No reason why we can't be battling Bama, Clemson, Ohio State, fir championships every year, but we need a good coach in order to do it. We don't have one.
