Rightly or wrongly, there was a lot of controversy over Cody Kessler's performance in the Notre Dame game. Because of that I took the liberty of cutting up all of his highlights from this past weekend’s game so everyone can re-watch it and judge for themselves. I've included every single pass attempt from the game including incompletions, scrambles, and interceptions. Below is my own personal analysis of each passing play.

    Play by Play:

    1st Quarter
2nd and 11 - Swing pass to Madden for 16 yards, TE Macnamara possibly open on deep corner route. Well-placed pass to hit Madden in stride to maximize extra yards.
2nd and 8 - Flea-flicker. ND brings entire front seven. Juju beats CB #6 but pressure gets to Kessler. Max protection blocking so only 2 receiving options. No short check downs. Good scramble to prevent sack. Throwaway.
3rd and 8 - ND blitzes 3 LBs thru A gaps. Madden misses blitz pick up. Great pass knowing he was going to get hit. Juju doesn’t get much separation but good use of hands and comes back to ball thrown slightly inside. 37 yard reception.
2nd and Goal - Play-action and no one is open. Good decision to run in for 3 yard TD.
1st and 10 - Easy curl to Hampton for 8 yards.
3rd and 2 - Good play clay. Short drag to Rogers who breaks tackle for 1st down and picks up 15 yards. 1st down.
1st and 10 - Deep overthrow by Kessler to Juju. Not a lot of separation by Juju. ND had unblocked edge blitzer forcing quick throw.
3rd and 8 - ND only rushes 4. Good protection. Check down to RB Davis, can’t tell if anyone is open based on camera angle. 2 WR’s at the top of the screen look covered.
2nd and 13 - Risky play, poor execution. ND LB Jaylon Smith beats WR Jalen Greene’s block and almost has INT on screen pass. 5 yard reception.
3rd and 8 - Bad play design IMO. Max protection against 5 rushers. TE and RB stay in to block. Good initial blitz pick up but Madden releases defender forcing Kessler to leave pocket. 2 deep routes and a FB running 10 yard out. Need shorter routes to get ball out sooner IMO. FB is NOT A WR. Throwaway.
2nd and 4 - Slant-flat combo. Cody waits for safety to jump flat. Corner sees the slant route and tries to jump it inside. Kessler has to throw back shoulder afraid of undercut. This play should’ve worked. Cody needs to anticipate sooner, Rogers could’ve come out of break harder. Incomplete.
3rd and 4 - ND rushes 4. Kessler shovel to Madden for 6 yards. 1st down.
1st and 15 - ND rushes 5. Immediate pressure inside. Cody scrambles and throws incomplete to Rogers. Good job to avoid a sack.
2nd and 10 - Primary read is Adoree on stop and go. CB jumps stop and looks like Adoree will be open but CB still gets a bump on Adoree as he tries to go past. Probably could’ve still thrown to Adoree but timing was off and S was coming over. TE and FB in blocking again, 7 blockers vs 4 rushers. Only 3 receiving options with middle WR covered. Dump to Rogers for short gain. Great catch by Rogers.
3rd and 8 - Designed quick swing pass to RB Justin Davis. WR Hampton blocks early leading to PI penalty. Would-be 17 yard gain eliminated.
3rd and 23 - ND drops 8 into coverage. Good protection vs 3 rushers. Kessler steps up and hits Rogers for 11 yards on dig route.
4th and 12 - Pocket collapses on left side. Kessler could’ve released ball earlier even if to just check down. Scrambles then dangerous throw to RB late in traffic.

    2nd Quarter

2nd and 10 - Max protection again. TE and FB in to block. ND rushes 4. Only 3 receiving options (2WRs and RB). Checks down to RB. Pass is behind Ronald Jones II but still catchable. RJII is amazingly gifted but needs to work on hands IMO. Incomplete.
1st and 10 - Play-action. Immediate backside pressure. Bad blocking by Banner/Petite. Kessler dumps to Petite for 1 yard. LB’s bit hard on PA. Missed opportunity due to pressure.
2nd and 9 - Getting the ball to Adoree in space with blockers = TOUCHDOWN.
1st and 10 - Quick hitch to Juju for 2 yards.
2nd and 8 - Good coverage by ND. No WR’s in picture have much separation. Kessler scrambles for short gain. (Late hit penalty by ND)
1st and 10 - Quick drag to Juju. Good play by LB Jaylon Smith who baited Kessler into thinking he was picking up Petite. Madden looked like the better option on slant vs LB had Kessler held on for 1 more second and let Juju clear.
2nd and 12 - Looked like a designed rub concept to free up Greene. Worked well and Greene picks up the extra YAC to get the 1st down. 16 yard reception. Good play call.
1st and 10 - Kessler takes a deep shot to Greene on slant and go. CB has good positioning and Greene quits on route looking for a penalty. Greene needs to keep fighting for position and maybe could’ve still made the catch or would’ve been more likely to get PI call.
2nd and 10 - ND sends 5 rushers. Good pocket. Man coverage and Kessler throws comeback to Juju. Low pass. Incompletion.
3rd and 10 - ND rushes 4. RG Viane gets beat by DT Sheldon Day. Kessler has to unload quick to Tyler Petite along the sideline. Good decision, 8 yd rec stops clock for FG.

    3rd Quarter

2nd and 21 - Stunt beats blocking on left side. Kessler drifts right to avoid pressure and makes tough throw across body to Burnett. Burnett picks up YAC for 19 yards.
2nd and Goal - USC hurries up to the line, ND still getting set. Play-action gets ND defense and McNamara is wide open in the corner of the end zone. Easy TD.
1st and 10 - Play-action, quick slant to Juju for 8 yards. Well placed ball in decent coverage.
1st and 10 - Greene short screen for 6 yards.
3rd and 5 - Pass intended for Greene on quick hitch. Deflected by ND DE.

    4th Quarter

1st and 10 - Play-action. Burnett matched up with a LB in man coverage. Kessler lobs from opposite hash to hit Burnett perfectly near the sideline. 28 yard reception. Perfect pass from opposite hash to sideline.
2nd and 10 - ND rushes 4. Good protection. No one open, good coverage on Burnett. Incompletion.
3rd and 10 - ND sends 5. Immediate pressure on left side. Mama/Wheeler don’t pick up DT on stunt. Madden can’t pick up DT either. Sack.
2nd and 6 - Stop and go to Juju in man coverage. Kessler releases anticipating CB to jump the stop. Ball thrown short and to the outside. CB doesn’t bite and plays the ball in the air better than Juju. Juju overruns and doesn’t throttle down to make an attempt for jump ball. Underthrow + WR not going up for ball = Interception.
1st and 10 - Inside pressure from right side over Viane. DT gets good penetration. Kessler rolls to avoid rush and throws away. Adoree possibly open early in the middle.
2nd and 10 - ND sends 5. DL stunts and appears as if a rusher is going to come free over middle. Kessler slides left and Toa picks up rusher late. Kessler unloads early. Toa could’ve stayed in the middle longer to pick up rusher sooner which hurries Kessler. TE McNamara wide open in the flat. Great coverage by CB Russell on Juju. Ball very slightly behind allowing CB to close and reach thru WR’s hands and deflect the ball. Decent pass (1ft to the left is a completion) but shouldn’t have forced into tight coverage with safety nearby. Unlucky ricochet. Interception. F*ck Max Redfield.
1st and 10 - ND shows blitz. Only rushes 3 and drops 8. Solid protection. Quick pass to Burnett in the middle. 6 yard gain.
2nd and 4 - Rushes 3 and drops 8 again. Pocket starts to collapse inside. Kessler steps up and shovels to Madden. LB Jaylon Smith closes fast. 3 yard reception.
4th and 4 - ND rushes 3 and drops 8 once again. Chuma dives at DE and ends up on the ground. Viane picks up Chuma’s man. Decent protection. Kessler looks physically anxious with time but no one open. Kessler rolls left and finally hits Madden out of the backfield. WR’s looked covered in replay. 8 yard gain.
1st and 10 - ND rushes 4. Good protection. Kessler nice pass to Petite between 2 defenders for 17 yard reception.
1st and 10 - ND rushes 3 and drops 8. Chuma terrible block frees up DE. Kessler pressured immediately checks down to RB Madden for short gain. Clock runs, probably better to throw away and save time.
2nd and 6 - ND rushes 3 and drops 8 again. Good protection. Quick pass to walk-on Kolanz on drag route. Kolanz NEEDS to get to the sideline. CB on opposite side sits and makes tackle in bounds. Kolanz is slow. A faster WR gets out of bounds and stops the clock. No one else open in frame (difficult with 8 in coverage every snap). 1 yard gain. USC forced to use final timeout.
3rd and 5 - ND rushes 3 to the left, drops 8. Decent protection. Kessler rolls left away from pressure. Kolanz possibly open (don’t think Kessler trusts him). Kessler seems to think he can run. ND LB’s come up and LB Jaylon Smith closes fast. Burnett comes uncovered just as Kessler throws the ball away.
4th and 5 - ND rushes 4. Slight inside pressure over Viane. Kessler rolls right and hits Madden for a quick 6 yards and 1st down. Clock stops. Only 5 secs off the clock and 1st down.
1st and 10 - ND rushes 3. Slight pressure from right. Kessler hits Petite in the middle for would-be 12 yard reception. Dropped by Petite. Clock stops.
2nd and 10 - ND rushes 3. Pocket starts to collapses from left side. Kessler steps up easily. Hits Juju near sideline for 11 yards. Juju out of bounds. Clocks stops.
1st and 10 - ND rushes 4. Decent protection. Kessler scrambles quickly out of bounds for 2 yard gain. Clock stops. Can’t tell if anyone open downfield from camera angle.
2nd and 8 - ND rushes 4. Middle/right side of pocket collapses immediately. Viane and Chuma both beat. Kessler sacked. Clock runs down.
3rd and 8 - ND rushes 3. Initial protection okay. ND deep in coverage. Toa whiffs on block and Kessler shovels to J. Davis in the middle of the field right in front of LB Jaylon Smith. Quick tackle in bounds. 6 yard game. Clock runs out. Game over.

Nicely done, and your first post.

    Post more often, por favor.

Judging for myself, I'd say the CK in the first 3.75 quarters is taking chances downfield, running the ball when it's open and is focused with some nice ad libs. He makes some mistakes with the Ints, but they are the type you live with and tip your hat to the opposition.

The last minute or so of the 2 min drill, the team is giving up, IMHO, and Kessler is not pressing them to line up faster.

It does seem like the strategy was to get in FG range, then try the onside kick for a Hail Mary. But that only works if you run a tight 2 min drill. Kessler and the team didn't do that.

Thanks for the breakdown. Seems our OL & rbs not blocking well to give Cody time.

    Thank you.

That 4th quarter was pathetic. Why was 86 in there during crunch time.

    With 9, 89, 10 and 80 healthy -- along with 16 & 2 -- that is more than enough for a rotation at WR.

10 and 80 deserve more time and to be let out of the doghouse.

Thanks for the breakdown. Great job. I know it is asking too much, but I'd love to know how many yards Cody's passes actually traveled on his 30 completions. The stats say he passed for 365 yards....but tons of that was YAC.

This is really great stuff, Speed...Cody's pocket awareness was really on display in the first half.

I agree with Annenberg that he appears to go into a shell after the 2 INTs. The 1st INT you can definitely live with as the ND kid made a great play on a throw that was a little off. The 2nd INT was tougher as the TE was WIDE OPEN in the flat but still a pretty solid try to get it into your #1 play maker's hands.

I really believe that, while Cody isn't a Trojan Great, he is a great Trojan and I appreciate all he has done for us over his tenure. I just wish he had more gunslinger in him...

Seems like a fair assessment, BREW.

It's not too late for Cody. He can still have a strong game against Utah, and still beat the Bruins.

The team does need to help him with that. But he also needs to lead them by example.

We'll see. I like the kid and think he's made more big throws than he even realizes, let alone this board.

He just needs to let if fly during the tense times in games and not let himself or the guys around him get down if it results in a mistake. Just keep fighting, Cody.

Chuma Edoga's dive at the DE, is that taught by our coaching staff? Cody bailed him out but hate for that to happen again where he falls down.

Kolanz pass was in the middle of the field. I don't blame him for not getting to the sideline with three defenders in front of him. But yeah why is he in the game at that point.

I am impressed with all our young playmakers. Bright future ahead.

When the DE lines up that far outside I think that's what we're teaching the OT to do, although I don't necessary agree with it. Just a few plays before that I saw Chad Wheeler do the same thing on the other side. I just don't see the point of diving and ending up on the floor just to delay the rusher for a split second.
