My thoughts on when Clay will be released.

    Post your predictions below.

Mods - if you want to organize this into a monetized poll with half of the proceeds going to defray web site costs and the other half going to the winner - put me in for $50.

    Lynn has no choice now.

Why delay the inevitable when everyone sees it coming?

Spare clay the embarrassment of the ND game announcers speculating on when he gets fired and having to shake Kelly’s hand after getting throttled in an empty coli.

Wouldnt it be great if Helton took a page from NDs own Gerry Faust and resign from a job he realizes is beyond his ability.

The coliseum will not be empty... it will filled to the brim with ND fans...

    Oh gosh, you’re right.

My oh my, these are truly terrible times. Never thought I’d see our beloved storied program hit rock bottom. This is it, folks.

    Rock bottom.

Don't make shit up. Faust didn't resign. He served the entire 5-year contract, and ND didn't renew it. Simple as that.

My prediction is that it will occur, if it does, at 10:23 am on Monday, November 26.
No way he gets fired before the ND game. If next Saturday’s game was against a non-rival, then maybe tomorrow.
I can’t believe that they would openly concede the ND game.

    FAUST RESIGNS AT NOTRE DAME
    Phil HershCHICAGO TRIBUNE

Notre Dame football coach Gerry Faust surprised his weekly telephone press conference by announcing his resignation Tuesday morning.

I think it should be before the ND game. Let Clay coach it still. It takes all the pressure off, ends all the speculation. I actually think the team would play better. The status quo means we see a 40-point blowout where USC stops fighting sometime in the third quarter.

He announced his resignation at the end of the season and coincidentally at the end of a 5-year contract that was not renewed. Notre Dame was never going to renew his contract anyway.

Is that situation really what RDTK meant that he hoped Helton would do, since Helton still has five more years left on his contract? No. Not the same at all. Faust's "resignation" was a way for him and Notre Dame to save face and part amicably.

That would be the humane thing to do for all parties.

I don't think it would make the team play better, but I do think it should be done before the ND game.

And it happened so quickly! This is worse than Hackett. The Trojans cannot get out of their own way and despite having a lot of talent have no idea how to win.

I get the distinction but he may not have known the back story which is precisely as you stated. If memory serves he hastened his decision to resign to save the recruiting class.

My prediction, unfortunately, is that he will be released after the 2019 season. I can't remember too many things I've ever hoped more strongly that my prediction was wrong.

The clueless, money-grubbing powers that be at SC will try to milk one more year out of him. If they thought attendance was poor this year, just wait until next year if they keep Helton. They will get hit right where it hurts - in the wallet - when a high percentage of the alums don't renew their season tickets and the remodeled Coliseum is half empty.

If they don't want this scenario to play out, they must replace Helton before or right after the Notre Dame game. I've never hoped for a poor showing by the Trojans in any game. This will be a first, but once the game starts I'm sure I will feel differently. It's a win-win situation next Saturday.

It should have happened immediately after the UCLA game. Since it didn’t, it would happen next Monday after the blow out loss to ND.

Nothing will happen. Swann knows everyone is safe until there’s a new president and they clean up the medical school fiasco.

No, it’s not. Losing to a 2-8 UCLA team while a UC Davis cast off goes for almost three bills is just the appetizer. Nobody watched that game, in the stands or on TV.

Rock bottom is Saturday. The whole college football world watching in prime time while our most-important rival gives us a public flogging like 2016 Alabama. They won’t let up and, I suspect, our guys will eventually quit.

And we all get to continue wondering whether USC cares enough to relieve a genuinely incompetent coach of his duties.
