24/7 Sports is writing that former Trojan Ryan Kalil is tweeting Helton to hire Luke Kuechly as DC. Now I don't know if Kuechly is qualified to be DC at this stage but to have him somewhere on the staff would be a steal. I got to believe that if Kalil is willing to tweet HCCH regarding Kuechly's availability he has at least spoken to Kuecly about the opening. What do you all think?

Being a good player doesn’t necessarily translate to being a good coach.

But for next year, why not? I say make him an offer.

Really? Why next year? He hasn't coached a day in his life. Are you talking GA? That's about all he's qualified for.

I don't know. He was a hell of a player. With incredible passion. Does he deserve a spot on the coaches roster. I for one would love to have him as a role model for SC football players.

Because we need a DC, and quite frankly, I don’t think any DC will be able to get this team where it needs to be as a whole next season. And maybe, just maybe, Kuechly has the right stuff.

One of the smartest defensive players ever with a great passion and drive for the game. Would be a spark for the SC D. And would whip these lazy ass players into shape. I’m in. What do we have to lose? Helton is our HC. Doesn’t get much worse than that in D1 football

Sigh.......Dude has never been a coach.

I think we’ve had enough of that around here

I say go for it. John Lynch was a great player and a decent color commentator. He had no experience in player personnel management. He seems to have done a pretty good job for the Niners. We may find ourselves a diamond in the rough.

I would think that one will coach as they were coached. I wouldn’t object to having Kuechly on staff.

A player known to be one of the smartest defenders of the last decade, who gave 100% every play and who captained an NFL defense for seven years.

Why would Helton want this guy anywhere near the team?

Maybe to save his job? I can’t imagine him actively seeking a lousy DC, even if he is unable to recognize or take action when his DC is ineffective.

Nope. Other examples of ''taking a chance'' are Kenichi Udeze, Tee Martin, and of course the most infamous, Helton himself. How did those work out?

Yeah, if we REALLY want to throw in the towel on next year, let's bring in a complete novice to be our DC. And if Harrell bolts, maybe we can make Leinart our OC...I'm sure sitting next to UM, he absorbed some great coaching ability.

I honestly don’t think it would matter if we got Dave Aranda, Brent Venables, or Pete Carroll as our DC. The issues with the team are deeper than that and start at the HC. That’s why I’m not that concerned about taking our chances with the DC this time around.

Now when they finally do get around to dealing with the problem of the HC, they need to get it right. No more first time HC’s (Helton) or known mediocre (Sark) coaches.

Kuechly might have been am excellent player, but he hasn't coached at all yet. To give him the DC job would be almost criminally negligent. It would be like giving some 22-year old fresh out of college a Vice President of Sales position just because he was an excellent student.

I have no idea whatsoever if he can coach, especially as a DC....but I do know from teammates that he was considered an outstanding leader, both on and off the field

I think Kuechly has a higher calling. A short career with vivid videos of his in game concussions. I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes the face or ambassador of some medical CTE research firm.

So Peete, what exactly about being a defensive coordinator would be beyond Kuechly's skill set ? Enlighten me.

Ken Norton started at USC as a GA. But he and Pete had a special relationship. It is a way to get an extra coach.

We only hire athletic directors with zero experience. We require coaches to have a tiny bit.
