Noticed he was Pac-12 defensive freshman of the year. I remember he wanted to come to USC badly. What was the issue with recruiting him-- too many LB commits, academic issues, just a miss?

Way too many other LB commits. I'm guessing the coaching staff chose Solo, Raymond Scott, and IE over him, which they also have Abdul Malik-McClain, Elijah Winston, and Mauga who all looked great in practice from what I've read. If IE couldn't get on the field consistently as a freshman at USC with how he played in his limited minutes, nobody else would have.

Getting Pac-12 defensive freshman of the year is about both opportunity and talent. If IE played all year, I have no doubt he would have gotten it. That being said, he looked great and would have been a good addition. It's tough to say who's better or who will end up being better based on the experience this guy is going to get at ASU vs waiting your turn at USC.

Yeah, you make some choices and last year there were a lot of good linebacker options. I personally would have loved to see Merlin in this class but I'm more than fine with the guys we got. I was also told that the coaches felt he was a little rough around the edges, how much that might have impacted their choice I don't know.

You live with the choices you make and move on. Like Garry said the coaches did a phenomenal job signing the LBer studs they did get. You can't get them all.

I also heard there was a possible academic issue with qualifying at SC. Same thing with N’Keal Harry a couple years ago. However unlike N’Keal, there were so many LB stubs coaches kind of moved on early and didn’t wait for situation with Robertson to play out.

We'll see how the "rough around the edges" work out too...
I hope he does well at ASU off the field too.

I so glad this program avoids taking guys who are "rough around the edges".

Garry- "rough around the edges" in football technique or personality/lifestyle?

Wouldn't matter, Clancy would've RS him. IE was, is and will be so much better than Merlin but rode the pine insert Clancy.

It's disgusting how much talent rots on the bench under this guy and his stubborn, NFL style (lack of) rotations.

How did you feel about Robertson as a prospect compared to Solomon, Scott, and Mauga?

I liked him, but I like everyone of the guys we took more. We had a tremendous class.

The one guy I think is very underrated is Scott. Kid is a player and could be a force if given a chance.

Some kids, you don't really know how ROUGH their EDGES might be until they're on their OWN with out an adult supervising them regularly...just sayin'. I've had some junior high "angels" turn into High School terrors OFF THE FIELD and end up in either Juvie or continuation school...and their parents were/are friends of mine.

    Fight On, FOREVER, Fight On!
