I know he was very well criticized (some deserved) during his stint as DC here, I laughed when Cal gave him a HC job but he’s been pretty solid in his time there. Turned a terrible team into top 25 program. Big road win today against a SEC team and now they’re 4-0. Gotta give him some props.

He’s been the real deal DC at every stop except at USC. He didn’t forget how to be a good DC. Just goes to show you how important the HC is to setting the culture of the program, and Sark and Helton have both been Charmin soft.

They finally have a real QB. I’ve been impressed with Garbers.

Cal has a solid defense! I think outside of ND this will be one of our toughest games this year. Maturity is a good thing, but as I always tell my son, a lot depends on who you hand around with. Unfortunately at that time it was Sark who just went through a nasty divorce, so the priorities were different at the time. Sark needed a wingman and Justin was it.

And some want to dismiss the importance of coaching? Both Wilcox and Petersen recruit West Coast soft kids....lol. Both are doing more, with less, than Helton.

I was always confused by his stint at USC. He has been very good everywhere else, but I remember being pretty happy when he was let go at the time.

Not sure the criticism was well deserved ... Sark as HC was the problem IMO. Regardless .. who's laughing now? As of today .. you'd have to rank Cal as the #1 team in the Pac -12 given their win over UW in Seattle and a 4-0 record.

A lot of it stemmed from that ASU game and the “Hail Sarky” that everyone knew was coming yet didn’t defend it. Even more was the complete collapse on defense (and offense) over the last 6 minutes to even get into position for the Hail Sarky to begin with. They gave away a game that we had all but locked up with 6 min. to go.

Then Arizona darn near pulled off the same thing a few weeks later but we managed to barely hang on.

We were all calling for Sark and Wilcox to go, and with valid reasons at the time.
