Helton is starstruck by his own players. He can't mold them into something that he wants them to be- because he has no idea what that is.

When you hear Dabo talk about Lawrence- who came off an almost perfect freshman year- he challenged him to become a run threat and scramble to make plays. For Darnolds second year, Helton was just saying let him do what he's gifted at doing. No development. Opposing teams game planned better against Darnold and he probably regressed.

Helton is not going to win anything even if he had the number one recruiting class every year since he's been the head coach. On defensive side of the ball, his team's inability to stop the opponents from scoring is clearly the issue; on the offensive side, they can't run it CONSISTENTLY to give the opponents another dimension to defend. Out schemed, and overmatched in all phases of the game is not the winning formula. Add the head coach that just doesn't know how to get it done; the program will spiral down into the abyss as it is now! I've seen better circus acts ...

Hey, don't diss the circus! Circus acts require concentration, hard work, and endless repetition to entertain the crowds! None of that applies to Clay Helton's teams!

Coach O, during his stint as interim coach managed to win ten games with an injury depleted team, and had Helton as his offensive coordinator. He never made excuses about the injury or lack of talent due to sanctions. So no, Helton is not the guy. He's mediocre at best, he's lazy as a recruiter, hires mediocre coaches, makes excuses for everything. The man has no pride on the program. How can you as the head coach at SC let Cristobol come in SoCal and talk shit about you and routinely take the best players out of your backyard? Could you imagine what Pete Carroll would have done about this situation? He'd send Cristobal a message by going after his best players. It's been five years, time to move on!

Somewhere HCCH got in his own way.
He needs to do a complete 180° and get back to the basics:
    - HITTING, not thumping in practice
    - Teaching the fundamentals
    - Understanding gap assignments
    - STRICT punishments for anything that is not up to the USC standard (I am looking directly at you Griffin)
    - Becoming a CEO and letting his OC/DC run their system without the constant micro-managing
    - Player development
    - In-game adjustments

The last two are arguably the most glaring (for me) and can easily be fixed if our head coach wanted to do so
