and it was really just USC's football support that was terrible for this last decade?

I don't think it's likely but it is definitely true that USC has basically cut football support funding over and over again under Helton. We have one of the smallest staffs among the PAC-12 and definitely the least funded amongst any of the "blue blood" schools. I have a connection at Heritage Hall and he told me that the athletics department regularly goes to Clay Helton to tell him they are cutting x, y, or z and until Bohn came onto campus, Helton has basically been told to shove it if he tries to push back at all on cuts. Now Bohn and Sosna are committed to put some money back into the program. It also looks like USC is reaching out and hiring a number of new employees for football recruiting and operations. I was told they are going to add 10+ people before next season starts and that Sosna is heading that mission specifically because he has surveyed the other national programs and we are way, way behind where everyone else is.

Maybe it's putting lipstick on a pig, but maybe it's a step in the right direction. I personally don't think it will help recruiting but I do know that the players already at USC deserve better, especially when they could go to LSU, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Clemson, etc. and receive a lot more attention on and off the football field.

I would love nothing more than Clay Helton to “turn it on” next season and win the conference and get into the CFP and repeat the results for several years in a row, proving your u nlikely theory correct.

Unfortunately we have too much evidence to the contrary. Listen to that man speak. He is the problem. No accountability. No fire. No integrity.

Of course there is a chance - in the dumb and dumber "so you're saying there's a chance" realm, unfortunately.

Clay Helton would have to accept the reality that he has failed to properly prepare his football team on the practice field five years running. If he was capable of accepting that and then correcting it, he probably could come good. The problem is most of us recognized this three or four years ago. And if he didn't see it then its hard to see him figuring it out now unfortunately.

The problem is Helton. He has either been unable to recognize when his assistant coaches are ineffective or been unwilling to make the changes necessary to correct it (or both). Just as important, he cant seem to recognize that his players have trouble tackling in game because they don’t practice it. There are many other issues as well.

These are on Helton, and are not the result of interference or lack of support from USC admin. Where the blame falls on USC admin is in not recognizing that the problem is Helton and making the change at HC.

In fairness to Helton he was coaching during the sanction years where very short handed. So stating with Kiff had to ease back on practices due to lack of players. And Helton might have kept that direction
But the Sanctions are over and it has to go back to full throttle
Hopefully Helton is smart enough to realize this
That he has to learn to be more of a leader and inspire
That seems to be his biggest weakness. He cannot inspire. And he cannot make adjustments in the game
But if he learns to manage and work with coaches that are smart it will help
    the team
Helton must make adjustments like the ND coach

You can’t teach good judgement and Helton doesn’t doesn’t have it.

As the saying goes... you can’t send a duck to eagle school.

Clay is more of a duck than an eagle.

In all seriousness, Clay is more suited to an administrative role than coaching.

Helton does not get a pass in my book:

He hired his brother Tyson Helton
He Hired his dads friend Neil Calloway
He Hired CP's friend Ronnie Bradford
He Promoted Tee Martin to OC
He Kept John Baxter a year too long
He Kept Clancy Pendergast a year too long.
Those love of my life/ Fresh Legs post game pressors were embarrassing to watch.
He had several so called Situational Mastery in game management fails
He had to be told to give up the play calling and hire a new OC by Swann. Now a DC by Bohn. The guy needs to be baby sat.
Dozens of recruits left the program over the years because of one of the following, favoritism, missed evaluation of skill level, character, or team need. The HC is responsible for all of this. He has the final say and shoulders all the responsibility.

    https://247sports.com/college/usc/Season/2016-Football/Commits/

The 2016 class: Is an unbelievable example of why we don't have depth in a lot of areas. These guys would have been Jr's or Sr's in 2020.

    2016 class
    20 players signed:
10 have left the team (Valus Jones was the 10th)
1 was a JC transfer and played the equivalent of 1 year and he's gone.
3 Have made very little impact

Bottom line: 14 of the 20 Scholarships (70% missed rate). How does this effect the program. You have to use more picks to replace the guy you thought you had.
This is one example. There were a string of classes like this. During this time Oregon loaded up and took over the conference.

This all Happened on Clay's watch.
How Many Do Overs does he get?

He was here during the sanctions, but you have to adapt or get left behind. Helton and his USC team have been left behind. And at some point, we have to move past the sanctions. That point was several years ago.

As someone else said, I would like nothing more than for Helton to have this team ready, have a great season, make the CFP and truly contend for an NC. But I said that last season too, and I’m just not seeing anything to indicate that he has the skills to make it happen.

His clock mgmt and timeout usage, is enough to fire the guy over.

No amount of funding or support would change his soft ass philosophy of limited tackling in practice. You either are a leader of men, or aren’t. He ain’t.

He’s just not made to coach power 5 level! Doesn’t have the intelligence, personality, nor the drive to succeed.

Too much of a track record there to indicate that he is anything other than what he has shown us. No matter how much of the following anyone does, it is what it is.....

    Naw. He sucks.

Maybe he can get marginally better with better coaches working for him, and maybe beefing up the recruiting staff will help there somewhat, but he's never going to be what we want.

    Sanctions are looong gone.
There should be a penalty for even bringing it up as any type of.justification for the current state of things
