There is a lot of talk about Swann firing Helton. I wonder if he even has the authority to do it. My guess is that he is a lame duck and won't be in the AD job for the long term.
The biggest issue at the University is finding a new President. That person will want his/her people in the key positions. That ultimately means a new Provost and Athletic Director. But it will unfortunately take time.
In the interim, I don't see Wanda Austin getting involved. So it comes down to whether Caruso wants to do it. If so, would he rely on Sark's buddy, Steve Lopes, who in reality runs the department.
These are hard times for our beloved University.

all depends on where he president comes from. if the president understand the value of football, then yes, he will replace Swann and look to a power 5 conference school to either swipe and AD or an up and comer. if its a West coast person in the network....it will probably be status quo.

There needs to be serious money and effort put into the football program if they want it to be a money maker. if they are happy with where it is, then no sense replacing anyone.

Agree its about the president, do not see it happening. As far as Swann, to be fair, he has Helton on a short leash, he does not have a monster contract or buyout from what I understand.

I would have promoted Steve Lopes to the position. He cares deeply about how we represent and perform and has lived ate and breathed SC Athletics longer than anyone else around [JRII doesn't count since part tie emeritus] But Jc_69 do you have to be so depressing? I'm just afraid you are right.

Swann has the authority, I’m pretty sure of it. PH had the authority to fire Sark, I’m sure that as AD, he has the authority to fire coaches.

Considering the President is interim and kiiinda has bigger things on her plate, I'd imagine the buck stops with Swann.

In a perfect world, Lopes would have been a slam dunk and given our penchant for hiring from within, I was dumbstruck when he was not only not hired but that the person they did hire had absolutely nothing on his resume that said he should have been hired. But administrators who I work with (I'm a part time faculty member) told me this was not an unusual move for Nikias given that he wanted to control EVERYTHING on campus and the only way he could do that was to put empty suits in every open position whether they were really qualified or not. Swann is the perfect example of an empty suit who was hired for no other reason than to shake hands with potential d0nors who like to sniff jocks. Has anyone ever heard an interview with him to find out about his vision for the athletic program? I know, neither have I. He either doesn't have one or he was told from on high to keep that vision to himself. It's stupid to talk about replacing Clay until you have identified who is going to do the firing and who is going to do the hiring.

Lynn Swann is the one to extend the contract extension to Helton, so don't hold your breathe if you are thinking he is going to axe him one year later. The next President of USC will have to intervene to force a change. I doubt Swann will do it; without giving him an opportunity to revamp his staff first.

"We have lofty goals at USC and Clay can get us to those goals," USC athletic director Lynn Swann said. "He has shown that he can lead our team with integrity and stability and that he has the ability to win conference and national championships."

I would tend to agree with you. But a few more responses like "Toa is our center. Next Question." ...and Swann might have to rethink.

Based on current philosophy of the university I feel the the next president will be a major let down for those who are hoping for a re emphasis of the football program . Swann is not going to do anything dramatic . He is from the Steelers idea of sink or swim with who you have
Indeed as stated earlier as far as football is concerned dark days ahead for Fig Tech
    ☹️

Well, considering Stanford can play some good football, has more NCAA titles than anyone else in the PAC, and can still reign academically, there's nothing to say that USC can't move in the same direction.
We already match ucla when it comes to the academic performance of our incoming students, and we outdo them when it comes to difficulty of admission to the university.
We have the ability, with the right leadership, to put Berkeley in our sights next. In some ways we're already doing so.
It will mean finding the right president, however, who has academics as a priority in his vision, but will also recognize the role our athletic traditions have played in our history as well, to get us to that next level.

I'll bet USC promotes her to the full-time gig.

It's the USC way, and she clearly gets USC.

Actually, Swann was only the Athletic Director when Helton was extended; extending him was Nikias's idea in order to keep the football program off his plate for the foreseeable future. If Lynn had his way, Helton would be nowhere near the program.

Lynn Swann is a puppet that’s why he was hired by Nikias. If USC wanted to be about football they would’ve snatched some other AD from another conference.
