ASU's DC is former SDSU DC, Gonzales and he does run the 3-3-5. As stated above I think Arnett runs a 4-2-5. I couldn't find confirmation but that's what it looked like to me in their bowl game.

I found an article that confirmed they run the 3-3-5. Here is an excerpt from it:
"...San Diego State uses a 3-3-5 defense, which is atypical in the college football landscape. With three down linemen, three linebackers and five defensive backs, the Aztecs throw a curveball at most teams.

Long frequently morphs that defense, sliding a linebacker up to the line of scrimmage and moving a safety up, creating a typical seven-man box, but with unique personnel.

It’s this approach that’s allowed the Aztecs to keep teams to 64 rushing yards per game on average this season, which leads the Mountain West."

    https://www.mercurynews.com/2019/10/18/san-jose-state-will-have-to-air-it-out-to-bounce-back-against-stout-san-diego-state-defense/

The 3-3-5 may fit well with our current player personnel.

They are still running the same 3-3-5. I found an article discussing it. See my comment above.

They also played Fresno State better than we did.

Interesting, but with a twist of moving a LB and safety up at times. I wonder what he could do with our players. Thanks for finding that article.

    We had 3 common opponents.
    UCLA
    BYU
    Fresno St

San Diego St gave up 24 points
Our Trojans gave up 88 points

We're not use to seeing SC play defense like this.

I would be on board for Arnett. He’s learned under Rocky Long. He’s a young and hungry guy. The Aztecs play tough and hard nosed week in and week out. I don’t worry about who they’ve played. I care about what they do, with who they have.

In this wish on a star scenario, why not try and get both? Or Ken Norton Jr. he could see the writing on the wall of an opportunity to be come a HC. I don't think he gets a HC job in the League.
Richard is being touted as a possible HC in the League but a year or two at USC and a turnaround of the program here gives him another feather in his cap along with HC experience to put in front of the League.
I don't think this next offensive genius wonderboy thing is gonna last long in the NFL. Even the guy who started it all, Sean McVay of the Rams, has shown that it can be shut down by a good defensive minded coach.
I honestly believe these young guys with HC jobs now won't be around long running these semi Air Raid offenses in the League. For that matter, The Ravens are running a glorified college triple action offense and killing it. It's the guys who have a defensive background and can stop these offenses that will be the next wave of NFL coaches.
    Just a thought.

    Fight On!

I want Jack Del Rio. He has the experience that SC needs at this point

Fire Helton first then let the head coach bring in his staff.

If you see how crappy the Cowboys defense have been looking, I don't want no parts of Kris Richard.

I just want an up and comer like harrell for our DC... just a few years of unmistakable defensive improvement somewhere.

I remember back in the 90s UCLA/Long giving us fits with that D. He had good players there though. The entire back five were NFL drafted

My number one choice is Tim DeRuyter. Why is nobody talking about him? He has a record of turning defenses around. He has done well at Cal, and they are not overflowing with 4 and 5* recruits.
Number two choice is Bret Beilema. He will come for the right price. Will get our defense playing well.
I like Zach Arnett. His defense was statistically lights out in 2019. But he is so under the radar and does not have a lot of experience as DC. In my opinion he would be our last option.

I wonder how Nick Holt is doing. Helton is probably on the phone with him now.

One of their best DCs. It's an unusual defense that I think would work well in the Pac12.
