I know it's something in the past, but I remember that Kayvon was just about a 100% USC lean in his sophomore and junior years. I don't remember how or why USC didn't go after him harder. Was it something about the player not fitting the system? For me, I don't care if the player doesn't fit the system, if he's the best player in the country or one of the best, you get him and make adjustments to get him on the field and put him in a position to succeed.

    Possibles:

    — Most everybody who grows up and flourishes in SoCal is “an ‘SC lean” in the 10th-11th grade. What else do they know? Ucla?
    — No one really knows how close KT was to going to ‘SC but KT himself.....most is just projection by others.
    — Some people just want out of town and experience new things...for many players, that doesn’t happen until their junior/senior years.
    — Friends/players in other places
    — Weak on-field football product
    — Coaching/System
    — Money

It was well documented that Clancy Pendergast lost interest in him because he couldn't figure out where KT would fit into his defense; he was too slow to play OLB and too small to play DE in a 3-4 alignment. Nice call Clancy!

That is something that has been tossed around here a few times. I’ve asked this before to another board regular poster that made that accusation, and I’ll ask again to you: what is your source? Is it a well known secret, or are you just throwing around conjecture?

This was all down to lazy, disinterested recruiting. Oregon stayed on him, showed endless amounts of love, etc....he was USC's to lose, and USC found a way to lose him.

I think this is probably the most likely account of how we lost Kayvon. Lazy recruiting by Pendergast. Also, can’t overlook that Donte was in his last year at OR
I’m the king mutherfuckah. Don’t fucking forget it bitch. (LOL...I’m so fucking funny)

He Pendergast didn't recruit, then who the hell held the tiller on this boat? Where does the buck stop, Helton! somebody had to say "Sorry, were not interested in the #1 player in the Country"

I believe that there are a minimum of two sides to every story. I think that Clancy likely failed in pursuing KT, whether because he was lazy or stubbornly felt as though Kayvon wouldn’t fit his scheme - IDK. Above all, HCCH had to be where the buck stopped. KT like many other key local players, left SoCal and we’re all scratching our heads, enraged, and just plain filled with disgust. Why? Because we know that in order to get back to National Championship form - we desperately need guys of this caliber to suit up as Trojans.

So while I’ve shared the hard feelings that many of us have expressed, the other side of the story, is the one that matters the most - the players. After reading “Why KT chose UO” in the link below, I have to concede that what
really matters is that the student athlete has to pursue their dream. Whether we like to admit it or not, it may not be because they weren’t “pursued” or “sold” on SC, or dare I say it... our football program wasn’t the best choice for them at the time. It comes down to what they decide is best for them. Don’t we have to be willing to accept their own explanation, and just be good with it?

I think bizarre would be more of an accurate description.
