Not a Helton lover, but either the players are really stupid and can’t learn from mistakes or Helton is not coaching them to fix those mistakes. These mistakes have been going on for the last 3 years. As the head coach, of course he has to shoulder that blame.

I agree. Same stupid penalties and they can't seem to take over a game. The running game is pitiful. Decision not to bring in Stepp as main back is more than headscratching...the dude punishes and pushes the pile forward. I like Malepei, but touch his shoestrings and he goes down immediately. Carr dances around and doesn't go north/south and punish people.

Many of the penalties against us were egregiously bad. Helton can't do anything about that. But a clean, superb game in all facets...nah, not with Helton. That will never happen.

Just imagine for a moment all of this talent with a truly GREAT coach.

I am still of the opinion that we need a new HC, there are still too many fundamental problems. You have to understand that one upset win is not going to restore confidence in Helton. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the win.

I do find it interesting though how there were threads about how the pumpers would be making excuses after we lost, as though it were already a done deal, and now folks are making excuses as to why we WON the game.

It wasn’t perfect and there were plenty of problems, problems that are persistent and show no signs of going away. But I don’t think we lucked into that win at all. I think the guys went out there, gave it their all and won that game.

We got a big win....but it was a ragtag, sloppy, uneven game with a bunch of noteworthy plays that went our way.

We actually got dominated for much of the game, but pulled it out with opportune play and heart.

A VERY HARD way to go through an entire season, if things don’t settle in correctly. Look for a continued roller coaster ride of emotions and results from this group.

Helton will ride the same wave....love it vs. hate it

All I know is that the moment Slovis went down, I thought we were cooked. The team found a way to win. That really is all that matters

So, are you saying that based on this win...and despite his previous record, Helton should be retained as head coach?
So, who are the crazies now? Or is this a wind-up?

Helton is not a good coach. No matter what happens this year, his past record proves it.

However, I do love our players, they played with passion and intensity yesterday. That's something to build on for the future. Whoever inherits this team has some ballers and some guys who want to win.

The two main obstacles to that...Helton and Pac-12 refs.

True, but the problem is, can they find a way all season with that kind of play?

Like I said, I’m thinking HUGE roller coaster if no coaching epiphany.

CCH is a decent man but not a good HC. Even at his best, USC will never take the step to the next level. Unfortunately, CCH is just not capable.

Hmmm, not sure if he is not capable, just don’t think he has enough time to learn.

GOSC, Helton can't exploit any team's weakness...he's incapable. He does exploit his molars at the back of his mouth with that dorky, incredulous look he sports on the sidelines:)

Gomer doesn't get a pat on the back for winning a game he's supposed to win. USC should, without question, pummel Utah every season. There's not a position on the field where Utah has a more talented, or highly-touted player than his USC counterpart.

The reason this game was even close, and the reason Utah entered ranked 10th and we were unranked, is coaching. Put Gomer on Utah and Whittingham on USC and it's a no-doubter. Give Urban Meyer this roster against this Utah team and the backups are in by the end of the third quarter.

Let me guess, when Chip Kelly loses tonight you're going to make a thread about who wanted Chip?

Honestly, I was patient because of past successful seasons, however I wanted him out after going 5-7 last season. If USC goes 10-2 or even 9-3 then I don't think firing him would be right and realistically it simply won't happen.
