This is the time of year when he is always super optimistic about the upcoming season. Yesterday we were talking about recruiting and he was explaining the genius of Chip Kelly’s recruiting strategy, “Jim Mora used to recruit highly ranked players but he got an unusually high amount of guys who weren’t passionate about playing football. Chip is recruiting a bunch of two-star players who absolutely LOVE playing the game.” Apparently this is Chipster’s big secret.

Last year when the ruins were getting manhandled by the likes of Cincinnati and Fresno St., his positive spin was, “They may be losing, but the players look so much happier on the sideline. They are actually smiling and having fun this year.”

He is always good for a few of these a year. I will try to post them when I hear them.

I have to say, I’d rather have a lower rated recruit who is passionate about football and dedicated to being the best player he can be than a 5 star who is lazy and entitled.

Better yet would be to get a 5 star who is dedicated and passionate about football.

What about when his ruins were manhandling USC after getting manhandled by Cincinnati and Fresno St? I mean for crying out loud, glass houses and all. How short is your memory?

That would be the first time I’ve seen genius and recruiting in the same sentence regarding Chip Kelly. I’ve seen recruiting and show cause - does that count?

I would have to think most 5 stars don’t become 5 stars by being lazy and not passionate enough

    Takes hard work

Isn’t that the difference in great coaching - a great coach can make A great team out of walkons or championship team out of 5 star players. The difference is I’ve never seen a great coach make a championship team without at least a few stud players.

Yes, most do. But there are occasionally those who have the physical gifts to shine in high school but not the mental maturity to succeed beyond that yet. And there are those who are “men among boys” in high school as far as talent and physical gifts, and don’t need to work as hard to be a star at that level. When they get to a Power 5 school, sometimes the level of work they put in at the high school level isn’t enough to be a star in college.

But yes, most do work hard to become 5 star recruits.

I agree. This is why I am still impressed by the job that Chris Peterson did at Boise St. with mainly 2 and 3 star recruits.

Player development is huge, whether you have a team of mainly 2/3 star recruits or a team loaded with 4/5 star recruits.

Will we ever know the full story behind USC and Peterson? There were so many different versions of the story and so many who became so emotionally unhinged at the final outcome. I guess it really doesn’t matter at this point and my understanding is that bridges were burned in the process. Still it would be a great to hear the real story over a good single malt and a cigar.

Dont really like Cigars so it would be 2 Malts for Me..I really dont think Peterson would of come to LA to begin with. He's more comfortable out of the limelight of the big City.. Boise st to Washington no big deal..Boise st to USC , Now thats a big change.People dont factor that into what happened.

He did say that he preferred to stay out of the limelight, but I heard that USC was the one big job he was interested in. After turning down overtures from nearly every major school that had an opening the previous 3-4 years, he was interested enough in USC to meet twice personally with Haden about the job.

My understanding was that only after meeting with Haden the second time that they “mutually agreed” that Peterson wouldn’t be coming to USC. Haden never made an offer to Peterson, or I believe we would have had Peterson as our HC today.

I don’t know, I hadn’t actually heard that but I wouldn’t have been surprised if that had been the case. I did hear that Haden wanted Sark all along from the moment they had an opening. Of course, that’s just hearsay, but when Sarks name was announced, Haden said that they had been considering Sark for awhile, and that while they had met with other coaches, everything kept coming back to Sarkisian.

There were also articles like this one popping up at the time:
